Fellow bibliophiles we must unite and save The Book Spot! This is the only locally owned, independent bookstore in the North Austin/Round Rock area.
We cannot just stand by and let it close. Danny, the owner, is such a great guy. He's super involved with the community, does book signings with the local schools, helps sponsor the high school sports teams, supports the scouts and in general goes out of his way to help everyone find the books they need. He is always there at The Book Spot ready with a joke and a smile or to sit down and chat for a spell. He knows almost every repeat customer by either name or reading preference. You don't get this at your big box store. The Book Spot has such personality, not to mention a huge selection of new and used books.
The store has always run on a shoe string budget. (The books are already half price but once a customer uses credit that goes down to a quarter price. A lot of books have to be sold to make rent when you're selling quarter price books). About a year ago the owners agreed to dissolve the marriage and that Danny would keep the store. This put more strain on the already tight store budget. Add in a less than spectacular holiday season and fewer events, due to staffing issues, and the store was becoming unable to keep up with expenses. At this time The Book Spot is about 6 months behind on rent and their credit line is maxed out.
The purpose of this campaign is to get The Book Spot back open (20k), pay off the debts to publishing houses (10k), bring all accounts up to date (10k), have money for advertising (5k), and have the funds to hire some great people (5k).
A bookstore is an essential part of a community. Please donate whatever amount fits into your budget. Please share this with everyone! We have lost too many small bookstores already. Let's band together and save this one.
