They say it takes a village to raise a child. That village exists here in Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn. Children's Books for the Soul, is an initiative for the community by the community, with our children as the focal point. Far too often Black and Brown children are underrepresented in literature. This creates a disconnect which further perpetuates Black erasure. We want to change this. This initiative was created to promote literacy, representation and a love for self. We are striving to cultivate a community of innovators, thinkers and creators through reading.
Our goal
Our goal is to purchase and distribute books (that are solely by Black and Brown authors), to children within the Bed-Stuy community. We aim to purchase books of all genres and age groups, with the intent to highlight our experiences, culture, mental health and autonomy.
Why?
Literacy is crucial to economic development, individual and community well-being. Cognizant of this, we're committed to building our children's stamina for reading, critical thinking and their overall world view. All of these points are pivotal and parallel to creating, maintaining and empowering self-love through literature .
Your donation
Every donation towards our fundraising goal will be used to purchase books by Black and Brown authors at local Black owned bookstores.
The village
My name is Brittany Thompson. I am an educator and mother. I am from Brooklyn (born and raised), and unapologetically Black. I am rooted in my community, committed to uplifting and dedicated to investing in our children's education. I have been blessed with a village of phenomenal diverse women, who are also committed to empowering Black and Brown voices. Our long term goal is to see this initiative expand to neighboring communities.
Date and Location
Tentative date: August 22, 2021 at Herbert Von King Park.
