Nelly García, my mother, is a writer, psychologist, historian, and educator.
Her life’s work has been dedicated to education, with a special focus on civic rights and duties, and on the core values that help build a society where everyone can thrive.
An avid reader, Mom’s passion for books is unmatched—she would read dictionaries or even the Yellow Pages if there were nothing else left on her shelves. To highlight her achievements, she wrote, co-directed, and produced a documentary about Dominican Founding Father Juan Pablo Duarte, which was nominated for a Casandra Award (the Dominican Republic’s equivalent of the Emmy Awards).
Now retired, she has returned to her true love: writing. Her dream is that her books reach as many children as possible.
This is where we need your help. Many children in the Dominican Republic face severe economic hardships and have limited access to books. Most of what they see comes from social media trends rather than formative, inspiring stories. We want to change that.
Our campaign aims to bring her book, Por qué los cocuyos comenzaron a brillar la noche de Navidad, to these children, giving them access to stories that inspire, teach, and spark imagination. With your support, we can place these books into the hands of children who need them most.
