Hi, my name is Rebecca Malach, and on Tuesday, I was sent a text telling me that I needed to call my mom immediately, as she was very sick and in the hospital.
However, when I called her, she wasn't the one who answered the phone. It was a friend of hers who only spoke Spanish. Unfortunately, I don't speak the best Spanish, so they passed the phone to someone who could translate for me, and she told me that my mother was very ill and that they needed me to consent to intubation, as she herself could not do so herself.
The rest of the day went by relatively ok. She was diagnosed with severe diabetic ketoacidosis, a C. difficile infection in her kidney, and sepsis, and we were told that she was even showing signs of improvement.
When we originally started this GoFundMe, it was to cover costs associated with this and any following days of care required, as it was simply not a cost we could just absorb. However, on the early morning of Wednesday, October 3rd, things changed.
I got a call early that morning from another one of my moms spanish only speaking friends, and I was able to make out her telling me I needed to check the group chat for my mother's hospital care plan. When I did, I found out my mom's heart had stopped and she had passed away during the night.
Many people were devastated to hear this news, as she had a very positive impact on our world. She was constantly giving everything she could, always choosing to see the best in people and believing in the continuously. She gave everything she had to offer to this world, and we are now hoping that some of her kindness can be returned to help cover costs associated with her passing.
