Previous information:
My name is Denise Juno...On behalf of our Dad, Bob Juno, my brother Bobby and I are starting a Gofundme fundraiser to help my parents pay for ongoing expenses due to my Dad's recent surgery for esophageal cancer.
For those of you who know my Dad, I don't need to tell you what an incredible person he is. For those who haven't had the good fortune to have met him, I would like to tell you a little about him.
Bob Juno of Anderson, South Carolina, is one of the most generous and kind people on this earth. In his 81 years, he has never met a stranger but has already become your friend for life! His hilarious personality and genuine spirit set you at ease when you are in his presence. Whether you are a clerk who checked him out at the local grocery store or a longtime friend, he leaves his mark on people each and every time you encounter him. He loves tailgating at Clemson football games, socializing with great friends while having cocktails, cooking gourmet foods to share with friends and neighbors, and most of all, looking forward to Fish Camp every year for the past 36 years in Michigan, where we are originally from. He adores his dog Dixie, and he loves us, his family, more than anything in the world. He is dedicated to his church and doesn't think twice about stopping everything to help anyone who has a need.
My Dad is a firm believer in God and has dedicated his life to helping others. In the past, he even had our family's golden retriever trained to become a service dog in order to help sick people in hospitals feel better and help them to a speedy recovery.
Well, now he needs your help. He is very sick and has been in the hospital since July 14th, 2022. Not only is he in the hospital much much longer than expected (we originally thought he would be home ten days after the initial surgery), but he also happens to be in a hospital two and a half hours away from home because the nearest doctors that specialize in esophageal cancer surgery happen to be in Charlotte, NC. So it makes it even more difficult for my mom, my brother and me due to the fact we are living in a hotel and have to rely on take-out food or whatever we can squeeze into the mini fridge from the grocery store. The hotel bills and living expenses are adding up quick after nearly six weeks of living away from home, and we have no idea how much longer we have to be here in Charlotte before we can transfer my Dad closer to his hometown. We haven't even thought about the medical bills that are yet to come.
The ten hour surgery went as planned and the doctors were able to remove the cancer and reconstruct the stomach to the esophogus. My dad spent the first three days in ICU and he was about to be moved to a regular hospital room when, on the fourth day, he coded and had to be resuscitated and placed on a ventilator. A few days later, he underwent a tracheostomy to help him breathe. He also contracted pneumonia, sepsis and infection. He spent a total of twelve days in ICU and was then moved to a step-down ICU unit in the hopes that respiratory therapists would help him wean off of the breathing machine and eventually, he could transfer to Greenville, SC to a long-term rehab facility to regain his strength and resume his normal life.
He has not been successful in weaning off of the breathing machine yet. He has had to have chest tubes placed in each lung to help drain fluid, he is on a feeding tube, and now he is experiencing renal failure. We are hoping to start him on dialysis as soon as possible. However, through it all, my Dad has remained in good spirits and kept his sense of humor, making the nurses and doctors laugh with his gentle smile or wink of an eye even though he has no voice because of the tracheostomy. He even shakes his fist at them jokingly when they come to draw more blood or inject him with more medicine.
We are spending as much time as we can with my Dad at the hospital. Then we come back to the hotel to eat, rest (if possible) and then go back to the hospital. The days are long and challenging for all of us since we can't go home until we can get my Dad stable enough to be transported nearly 125 miles away.
The funds raised will go toward all expenses incurred since we have been here and medical expenses. We truly appreciate anything you can do to help, and we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
