Help Boa Vista village to improve their food security

Donation protected
Dear friends and supporters,

The Huni Kuin people of Boa Vista village in the Kaxinawa Indigenous Territory of the Upper Jordão River in the state of Acre, Brazil, are facing significant challenges that threaten their traditional way of life and food security.

Just before Christmas, their manioc (cassava) crops, which are one of their main food sources, were devastated by invasive insects which ate all the leaves of the plants. The manioc harvest has been damaged in the whole area, and the costs of other sources of foods are expected to go up drastically as a result.

This is a tragedy for this the indigenous community that is already suffering from shortage of food caused by population growth, over-exploitation of fish and wild game, environmental degradation and droughts, fires and floods that have been plaguing this region of the Amazon rainforest during the past months and years.

To respond to this crisis and to help improve food security for the community at Boa Vista also for the future, we are raising funds to build a Casa de Farinha (a manioc processing house). Depending on how fast we manage to raise funds and begin building, there may be a chance to recover some of the manioc roots to prepare farinha (manioc flour) before the roots become too hard to consume. The Casa de Farinha can also support the community to generate some income to help improve their economy and ability to access other resources that they depend on.

If we are able to raise sufficient funds, we also want to help the community build a Casa de Feitio (a house for preparing traditional medicines), to help sustain the ancestral traditions of the village and to facilitate the generation of addition income.

By building these spaces, we will provide the community with the resources needed to recover from the recent crop loss and to improve their resilience in the face of similar situations in the future. The Casa de Farinha and Casa de Feitio will help the community maintain their cultural heritage and traditional ways of life while also supporting them to be more self-sufficient and resilient in the future.

How Your Donation Helps:
  • Construction of the Casa de Farinha and Casa de Feitio
  • Materials for building, including sustainable, locally sourced resources
  • Materials for processing manioc and preparing natural traditional medicines
  • Food for workers from the community
  • Support for the continued sustainability of Huni Kuin agriculture and cultural practices

Your donation, no matter the size, will make a lasting impact on the Huni Kuin village of Boa Vista. Together, we can help them overcome this challenge and ensure that their culture, agriculture, and community continue to thrive for generations to come.

Thank you for your generosity and support. Your kindness will help us rebuild, preserve, and empower this community of indigenous Wisdom Keepers and Guardians of the Rainforest in the face of adversity.

With gratitude,
