BMO Run for the AAPI community and MMIWG

In February 2021, two major tragedies (the Atlanta shootings and the death of Sarah Everard) sparked global conversations about the rise of anti-Asian hate crimes and the everyday experiences that women face simply because of their gender identity. We feel that these events represent larger systemic issues that intersect to highlight oppression against women and the AAPI community. Notably, Sarah Everard's death rightfully triggered outrage, but what was missing in the conversation about women's safety was how different systems of oppression based on race, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, and other identifiers accumulate to endanger Indigenous and AAPI women, especially in Canada:

- Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, anti-Asian hate crimes have increased by 717% in Vancouver

- 87% of Canadian anti-Asian hate crimes occur in British Columbia, and Canada reports more Anti-Asian hate crimes per capita compared to the United States

- 60% of those who report anti-Asian hate crimes are women

- In Canada, Indigenous women are 5x more likely to die as a result of violence compared to non-Indigenous women.

- There is an 84% chance that a missing person's case will be solved if the woman is non-Indigenous, but over 50% of missing Indigenous women’s cases remain unsolved in Canada

While the rise of anti-Asian hate crimes and Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls in Canada are both separate issues, they both represent the sexist, racist, and neocolonial attitudes that are entrenched in Canadian society. We feel that it is incredibly important to stand in solidarity with AAPI and Indigenous communities. With that being said, we have asked friends and family to support us as we run the BMO Half Marathon in May 2021. We also have asked able-bodied individuals to join us in running (either 5km, 10km, Half, or Full!) and fundraising for two local organizations that combat anti-Asian hate and support families of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls:
