If running through a crepe paper wall before starting a footy match seems a bit strange, that’s because it is. Research suggests no other sport in the world practices this ritual.
Since the beginning of time, humanity has felt the driving force to express itself. Early cave drawings, graffiti, social media memes and even toilet door slogans are all examples of this primal need for
expression.
Like a Tibetan Mandela, the preparation, skill and creativity that goes into crafting the banner can take hours, days, weeks, all to be destroyed in a matter of moments. But for the cheer squad and the 40,000+ fans, the moment the players burst through the banner is a truly spiritual experience, uniting the spectators, players, TV viewers in a symbolic battle cry.
But brilliant banners don’t just happen. Blood ‘n Boots looks at the diverse community and diehard fans who call themselves the Western Bulldogs cheer squad. They are the beating heart of the club and create the banner. If there is a bard amongst them, their Shakespeare is Danny McGinlay. Known for his clever crafting of the crepe paper comedy, the man returns in 2025 to show once again, how mighty the pen can be, and how the Banner can connect, combine, unite, charge and inspire a team, players, fans and the media.
