BLM Public Art - MONROE, LA

In the wake of the murders of Breonna Taylor and George Floyd, and the subsequent murals that popped up in their honor, it became evident to us that we could use a public art project to initiate much-needed conversations in the Monroe / West Monroe communities about the roots and effects of bigotry, racism, and exclusion. The mural allows us to address issues of police violence against Black people, and the overlooked history and contributions of African-Americans to this area. 

It is our intention to use these projects to lay the groundwork for community dialogues focusing on diversity, education, and access to resources. Each letter will be designed and executed by a team of artists, to be led by a local Black artist. We will reach out to talented art teachers to help involve younger artists in the projects, as a form of mentorship, professional development, and bridge-building.
  
This mural, the first in a series installed in various spaces around Monroe. Including, but not limited to, the Boys & Girls Clubs. Subsequent works will draw inspiration from the contemporary social justice movements, and center around #BlackGirlMagic, #BlackJoy, and #BlackFutures. It is our intention to use these projects to lay the groundwork for community dialogues focusing on diversity, education, and access to resources.

This mural project will be facilitated by Drék Davis, Brooke Foy, Vitus Shell and the Black Creatives Circle of North Louisiana.

All funding will go directly to the facilitation of this project.  It is our goal that all artist will be granted a stipend for their design work and leadership in painting their letters. Any additional funds raised will be presented to the Black Creatives Circle to allow them to become a non-profit and support their mission.
