We are everyday people trying to keep people in their homes because the more of us pitching in and showing up the better chance we have of keeping our neighbors in their homes.
It will take action from everyone.
The courts will allow evictions notices to go out starting June 1st.
Landlords need to drop late fees, make reasonable payment plans, and give everyone a chance to stay in their homes.
In Bedford County there are many housing issues that we have been working to address for 2 years. Now with the COVID-19, many renters are facing evictions. Many are out of work and still haven't received unemployment. They spend their stimulus money (if they have even gotten it) on electricity, water, food, and trying to keep up with rent. Rental cost here, even for the substandard housing, is between $160 - $220 a week. With landlords still charging late fees, it's hard for folks to even catch up. Landlords are passing out notices by the stack - families with children, and elderly folks will be thrown into the streets.
We should not have to be doing this. There is already a crisis in Bedford County with substandard housing and rising housing costs. We need change!
As Shanna Boyette, the city manager of Shelbyville said, landlords and renters needed to work together during this trying time. People need to stay in their homes during this time. Only as a united community can we stay together while the pandemic pushes on and come out of it stronger than ever.
We are helping our neighbors and community remain in their homes. We will not shame them. We will support each other through this.
