Blankets To The Streets: Help the Homeless is a national, U.S. based effort that raises money to buy and distribute life-saving mylar emergency blankets to the homeless. We are powered 100% by the efforts, post shares, monetary and product donations, as well as the time of volunteers. In addition to emergency mylar blankets, volunteers often provide winter weather gear, backpacks, food, information on local resources, and friendly faces. Founded in 2014, in the Washington DC area, Veda Taylor began this effort on her daily commute. It started as a simple desire to help those who were homeless survive winter on the city and suburban streets. As someone who was living below the poverty level, it initially seemed like an impossible task for her to undertake. However, with the help of friends, community members and Go Fund Me, it has grown from an effort along one commuter route, into a national effort. As the 2020/2021 winter season begins, Blankets to the Streets volunteers have handed out well over 84, 000 blankets, hundreds of pairs of socks, gloves, hand warmers, coats, shoes, backpacks, and countless meals and snacks, across the U.S. With the Spring and Summer occurrence of Covid-19, Blankets to the Street has also handed out more than 15 solar heated handwashing stations, as well as hygiene supplies, to homeless camps, to help combat the spread of the virus.
Some volunteer their time, some volunteer by sharing posts and publicity, some volunteer by donating money and goods. It only takes a little effort to do a lot. Every dollar makes a difference; all profits go toward this effort and getting supplies where they are needed. The only exceptions are when donors indicate that a portion of the donation may be used for administrative purposes, which support the efforts of Blankets to the Streets
*Please Note: We are now an official 501(c)3. Donations are now tax deductible. Please contact us or provide information, should you wish to receive a receipt. We can back date receipts for all donations, starting in March of 2020.
