BlackStarAcademy is a transformative online learning hub AND supplementary school, ushering in a new era of supplementary education for Black children across the UK as well as the wider diaspora.

But we stand at a critical juncture and need your urgent support to make this vision a reality.

The Urgent Need for Change

"Racism in mainstream schools in the 1960s was so bad, it started the supplementary school movement," says Professor Kehinde Andrews.

Decades later, the need for Black supplementary schools remains as pressing as ever.

Today, Black children in the UK face widening GCSE and A-level attainment gaps, with fixed-term exclusion rates for Black Caribbean pupils six times higher than their white peers in some areas.

These stark statistics underscore why BlackStarAcademy must exist—and why we need your help now more than ever.

Our Immediate Goal

To ensure we are able to provide the breadth of offerings we will need donations from the community.

1. Learning Mgmt System | This system is the backbone of our school, enabling us to deliver high-quality, culturally relevant education to our students from day one.

Why This Matters

Supplementary schools have always been about more than academics—they are sanctuaries of empowerment.

As Akala reflects on his own experience: "My local Pan-African Saturday school provided an alternative education that affirmed my Blackness."

These schools teach resilience, self-worth, and pride in heritage—qualities mainstream education often overlooks.

Yet funding has always been a challenge. Bernard Coard highlighted in his seminal work on educational inequality that systemic racism has long relegated Black children to the margins of opportunity.

"We are trained to see racism as an issue of interpersonal morality," Akala explains. "The reality is that racism is present in the historical, economic, social, and legal structures."

Building on a Legacy

From pioneers like Gus John and Dame Jocelyn Barrow to modern advocates like Lavinya Stennett of The Black Curriculum, the fight for equitable education has always been led by those who refuse to accept mediocrity for our children.
