The Celebration of Excellence and Achievement (COEA) aka Black Grad, is an annual event that honours students of African descent who have achieved a significant academic milestone for K- 12 and post-secondary institutions within Greater Victoria and beyond Greater Victoria.
This event is more than just a ceremony; it's a beacon of hope and recognition for K-12 and post-secondary students of African descent who have overcome significant obstacles to achieve academic success. Our event is a vibrant celebration that brings together families and communities to honour these students and their remarkable achievements. From showcasing graduates and their diverse areas of interest to providing them with well-deserved accolades, our event is a testament to the resilience and determination of these individuals.
The ceremony is taking place on May 9 at UVic. It will begin with traditional drumming and a procession of esteemed members of the community, followed by the graduates who take their seats and are surrounded by family and loved ones. Guest elders address the graduates, offering wisdom, inspiration and encouragement. Each student is awarded a special gift that connects to their career aspirations. The ceremony culminates with the donning of the Kente cloth which symbolizes the passing of knowledge - followed by a reception, music, dancing and photo opp's.
Our goal is to raise $5,000! These funds will be used to cover the cost of the venue and gifts for graduates.
Please make a donation to support Black Grad and help make this event a success.
