Black Vein Miners Memorial Society was formed in 2017 to protect, maintain and commemorate Risca's Mining History. We took over and now care for the Greenmeadow Miners Burial Ground, above the canal at Risca. We raised over £10,000 to erect a new fence, install a new Memorial Stone and an Information Board, and to purchase equipment to enable us to cut the grass and keep the site in a respectful condition. We raised further funds to install a Memorial Plaque in Waunfawr Park, over the underground roadway of the old Black Vein pit. We also maintain the Miners' Corner, adjacent to the Police Station in Risca, maintaining a flower bed there.
We gather to place wreaths and remember the two biggest disasters. 1860 when 142 men and boys died and 1880 when 120 men and boys died.
We also aim to help relatives of lost miners with historical content and research.
We have ongoing costs throughout the year and need to raise additional funds to successfully continue our work.
