My name is Kassie Drodge and I am the founder of the Black Mutual Aid Fund for Newfoundland and Labrador, and CEO/founder of the Mixed Coast Collective.
Born and raised in St. John’s NL, I have gained over 10 years of community organizing experience across the province and internationally. This funding initiative is close to my heart, as I share both a Newfoundlander and Labradorian and Jamaican identity, and deeply resonate with uplifting Black experiences and lives across the province, allowing children to succeed, families thrive, and individuals being supported.
In 2024 we raised over 5,000 dollars, which helped cover rent, tuition, food, children’s clothing, legal/government fees, and more!
The purpose is to foster a financial support system that will alleviate some financial barriers faced by Black individuals and community members. It is also intended to directly support any initiative/amplify concerns of the Black community across the province.
Black Mutual Aid Funds are quite common in other jurisdictions across Turtle Island, commonly known as North America. It's time we here in Ktaqmkuk (aka Newfoundland) get on board! Mutual Aid Funds are a financial pot that can be drawn from to help people when they need it.
There’s no judgment, there’s no red tape, there’s only support and meeting people where they are and helping them get what they need. No chairity - just solidarity! Together, we can create positive change and strengthen our community bonds.
Black people in this province have yet to have a NON REPAYABLE specific community fund that is sustainable year round, so that is our goal.
All donations + mutual aid transactions will be made available through quarterly statements on themccnl.com
