Birthday and Anniversary Shed Cycle for MSF

Hello!

I have been hugely inspired by Captain Tom Moore and his effort to raise £1,000 for the NHS by walking 100 laps of his garden before his 100th Birthday. I am sure you all heard about it in the press.

Like all of you, I am in complete awe of the NHS and medical professionals all over the world at this time. As such, I would like to raise funds for those medical staff working overseas. Many of the world’s poor have no access to life-saving medical facilities; in the entire African continent, there are just 20,000 critical care beds, equivalent to 1.7 for every 100,000 people. Malawi has just 25 ICU beds for its 17 million citizens, while in Bangladesh there are just 1,100 ICU beds for a population of more than 160 million. And while the UK health budget is $4,000 per citizen per year, in African countries it averages $12, according to the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development.

I have set my sights a little lower. I would like to try and raise £350 before my 35th birthday. If I achieve this I will cycle 10km for every year of my life on my indoor cycling trainer in my shed. That is 350km, or the equivalent distance from my house in North London to York! And I will attempt to do it in one go, on one day. This would be a huge day in the saddle and a good deal more than anything I have ever done on the road! What's more, as an added incentive, should I by some miracle manage to raise £3,500, I will convert the kilometres to miles. That's 350 miles (or 563km), in one go (basically London to Scotland). I expect that to take me well over 24hrs. Oh and I will do this on my birthday (May 26th) and Megan's Birthday (the next day), which is also our 1st wedding anniversary (yes we got married on our birthday). Megan and Simba (the puppy) will be running support crew.
