Bill's Bag Lunches - 2023 Fundraising Drive
Bill’s Bag Lunches
The idea for Bill’s Bag Lunches began as I was taking my wife to work in July of 2021. Each morning our then three-year-old daughter asked about the tents and people living along Ellice Street in Rock Bay. We explained to her the various reasons why someone might live on the street (mental health, addiction, etc.) and I had the idea to give her a more human experience by making and delivering bag lunches.
Together, we packaged up twenty bag lunches that included a sandwich, drink, apple, and chips and delivered them to the street community. This was a rewarding experience for both of us, and I decided that I wanted to continue this work and develop it into a weekly program.
The program officially started in January of 2021 and has grown from a 20 to a 50-bag/week lunch program provided every Friday. Bill along with a selection of eight volunteers makes lunches each Friday for the Tiny Home Village (30 bags) and the unhoused community in the Rock Bay area 20 bags) at the Centennial United Church kitchen space.
The goal for 2023 is to expand this program to 70 bags a week, offering a further 20 bag lunches to a proposed new community fridge in Fernwood for a total of 70 bags/week.
How you can help
Our goal is to help Bill raise $10,000 from local businesses and then apply to the City of Victoria for additional funding under the My Great Neighbourhood Grant (MGNG) program (to their max grant of $5,000). Additionally, this Go-Fun Me page has been created to request donations from the general public with a fundraising goal there set at $7,500. The rest of the cost would be in In-Kind labour. This makes for a total opperating budget of $22,500 for 2023 (which also covers $3,000 of personal investment in 2022).
Any amount helps. Though cash donations are the simplest, we understand that times are especially difficult this year. We are open to discussing alternatives to cash donations such as items that could be included in Bill’s Bag Lunches.
