Bigay Puso sa Pasko Year 9
Bigay Puso sa Pasko (English translation: Give Your Heart on Christmas) is an annual Christmas party for indigent kids in the Payatas community. Built on a landfill, Payatas remains as the largest open dumpsite in the Philippines and is one of the most poverty-stricken areas in Metro Manila. Although Payatas has been classified by the Department of Education as a disadvantaged, depressed, and underserved (DDU) urban area, and absenteeism and malnutrition are persistent and severe problems for most of its local students, the kids of Payatas are still always fun and genuinely happy all the time.
The project was founded in 2011 at Lupang Pangako Elementary School in Payatas, Quezon City by teacher Shirley E. Alambra after she noticed the lack of excitement and joy in her students at their previous Christmas parties, some eating sardines as their only holiday meal. With the help of sponsors, she was able to start providing 100 kids with groceries, toys, and a Jollibee meal each year at the annual Christmas party (with a special appearance from the Bee himself!).
Thanks to the increasing support and generosity of donors over the years, Bigay Puso sa Pasko has grown to sponsor more than double the number of kids as when it originally began. In the last two years alone, Bigay Puso sa Pasko was able to expand to an additional school to accommodate a total of 900 students.
This year's Bigay Puso sa Pasko event will be held for 300 kids at two different schools - Lupang Pangako Elementary School in Payatas, Quezon City (its original location) on December 8, 2019 and at West Fairview Elementary School in Quezon City on December 13, 2019. Approximately $6 will provide a grocery package, toy, and Jollibee meal for one student, and any amounts in excess of our initial goal will be used to include more students and donated towards the local community. Thank you so much in advance, especially to the friends and family who have consistently supported this project throughout the years. None of this has ever been possible without you. Maligayang pasko and happy holidays!
Love,
Kym
