On November 17, Betsy Toll met a friend for a meeting and tea in downtown Portland. It was a beautiful day, so after her meeting, she strolled down to Chapman Square to a peaceful rally supporting sexual assault victims. There was no violence or law-breaking going on, but within 30 minutes of getting there, Betsy was arrested, handcuffed, and taken to jail.
Betsy is fighting these charges instead of accepting the state’s plea deal. To make a strong defense, she needs experienced First Amendment representation that will focus on ensuring that no one’s Constitutional rights can be violated by capricious, unjust arrest.
We need to raise $4500 for legal support as Betsy prepares for a jury trial process that will drag on for months. It takes a village to make a difference, so please give what you can. Every dollar you contribute is an investment in ensuring that Portland is a place where the First Amendment is respected, upheld, and defended.
Attacks on one person’s Constitutional rights threaten everyone.
Building a broad base of support strengthens us as a community and demonstrates our commitment to protecting these rights for everyone as well as our support for a long-time member of the Portland community.
Betsy has been active in work for peace, justice, and compassion in Portland for more than 20 years. She leads dharma circles and offers meditation retreats. Now she faces charges for exercising First Amendment rights.
Please give what you can and share with your contacts. Let’s make this happen!
