Hi, my name is Bethan (14, Year 9) and I am fundraising towards my exciting, 4 week expedition to Peru, in July 2026, with Camps International.
Why Peru?
This is not simply a holiday. This is an expedition. I will spend much of the time immersed in the local community; living and working on initiatives that aim to make a measurable difference in some of the poorest regions, addressing critical issues like education and sanitation.
I will also embark on the gruelling 5 day Salkantay Trek, with an altitude of 4630m, to the ancient Incan UNESCO site of Machu Picchu. Therefore, part of my fundraising journey will involve long treks and hill/mountain peak climbs to both raise money and prepare for the challenge ahead.
What are the Issues?
- 50% of rural communities live below the poverty line
- Chronic malnutrition results from poor growing conditions and lack of education
- Deforestation. Peru contains the 4th largest area of tropical rainforest in the world, 94% of this is part of the Amazon Rainforest
Where will the money go?
38% of the money raised will go directly towards creating a direct impact to provide solutions including:
- Employing the local community
- Building kitchen and dining rooms in nearby schools
- Toilets in homes to improve health and hygiene
- Greenhouses for families to grow food and school children to learn about plants and nutrition
- Tree nurseries to reforest the area with indigenous trees and provide income for the community through selling of saplings
What is in it for me?
With your help, this will be an epic journey, where I will build my leadership, communication, independence, team building and problem solving skills, while creating memories to last a lifetime!
What is in it for you?
Sharing in my journey, I will share my progress both up to and on completion of my trip.
