My name is Bete Lapel - I am making my way toward a residency in Southern France where I will have about 3 months to deepen my practice in balancing acts for public art performance , cultural exchange, and community-building. I'll be documenting the process and bringing what I learn back into future performances, workshops, and collaborations.

Just before preparing for this residency, I injured my ankle during a photoshoot. While recovery means adjusting how I'm preparing physically, it also reminds me how unpredictable an artist's life can be, and how experienced, willing and ready I am to continue to pursue physical equilibrium art in the world today. My ankle injury is not a huge tragedy, but a clear reminder of the reality of the unpredictability of arts and culture work and life in general on the globe today. I feel great motivation and resiliency to adapt , while moving forward with this opportunity, and I hope to share the step by step journey with supporters, peers, as well as, past, present and future friends.

I've spent years building work that exists because people believed in it before any established program or institution did. This residency is another moment where community makes something possible.
