My name is George Hanna. I started lobbying Bernie Sanders to run for President in 2014. I am very determined to do everything I can to overturn Citizens United! I am writing you, asking for your support in sending me as the National Delegate from the first Congressional District of Kansas to the Democratic national convention in Philadelphia. The last time I was politically involved was when I chaired a subcommittee for school USD 501 school board. The purpose for that was because I opposed the deplorable actions of the Westboro Baptist Church and felt it was my moral responsibility to help ensure the WBC could not purchase a neighborhood school building to preach their hate. Before that I started the City of Topeka Chapter of the Kansas Association of Public Employees Union and was the President for their first ratification of their contract, securing the first raise in years for most of the city employees. Now I find myself in a similar position. It is my moral responsibility to help ensure my country does not elect a president that also preaches hate in a party supporting inequality.
My admiration for Bernie Sanders began in 2008. I was becoming increasingly frustrated with the huge amounts of money being poured into political advertisement and campaigns. Anyone from the outside looking in could see that our government was largely becoming bought and paid for. Yet there was an independent representative that was elected by his constituents to do a job. Not only did Bernie Sanders do that job he voted consistently as his constituents asked him to do regardless of how popular or unpopular it was, inspiring people all across the country. I began soliciting Bernie Sanders office seeking his presidential bid in 2008. Vermont was one of the lucky few that still had a government by the people for the people. As a former member of the Patriot Guard, I am not afraid to speak out for peace and to stand up for others who can’t. I also believe in a realistic interpretation of the second amendment. I am a disabled veteran of the Navy’s submarine service. I am becoming increasingly frustrated with the Veterans Administration. I worked in the automotive industry in 2008, representing Chrysler. I watched 30% of my paycheck evaporate with the Chrysler bankruptcy. Three years later I was on my way home after stopping by my additional part-time job when I was struck on my motorcycle by an uninsured motorist who was texting and driving. I was rushed to the trauma center in Wichita with a head injury and 21 fractures. I was hospitalized for multiple surgeries for over four weeks. I was in a wheelchair for nearly a year. As you can imagine my jobs were gone and what I've done my entire life I could no longer do. My private insurance covered most of the hundreds of thousands of dollars in bills, but not all. Since I was no longer able to do the job I once did I went back to school. My thinking was that with a degree I would be able to advance in my career to a job that was not as physically demanding. When I started going to school here at Kansas State, the interest rate on a unsubsidized student loan was 4%, today it is over 8%. To me that is ludicrous! You can get a mortgage at 3% but to better yourself through education it’s going to cost you 8%.
So now I write to you today as a grandfather concerned for the environment, an honor student at K State University with substantial student loan debt, a disabled veteran that was further disabled with substantial medical expense, absolutely repulsed by the amount of money going to the elite and their shameless use of that money to purchase politicians. Bernie Sanders has truly represented the average American citizen with the same message for nearly 30 years and the revolution that is needed to put our government back into our hands and with your help I will fight to get that message throughout the convention to get Bernie Sanders elected as our next president. As an elected delegate I feel it is my duty to engage the "Super Delegates" in a respectful debate and show them how their suport for Bernie Sanders is critical for this pivotal time in our wonderful country's history!
These funds are for round trip air fare ($800), hotel stay at the convention hotel(shockingly expensive, $647 per night ×5, but was advised it would be necessary to be effective), food and incidentals. I would be more than happy to provide copies of receipts as I am more than happy to be accountable for my actions. I find it personally difficult to ask for such a large amount of money but I believe in Bernie Sanders and will do everything I can to get him the Presidency!
