BeRationalTO: STOP the Yonge Street Bike Lanes

Donation protected
Stopping the ActiveTO bike lane fiasco along Yonge Street is our community based volunteer group’s top priority.

Yonge Street is a major arterial street and needs to return back to four lanes to accommodate the enormous traffic demands of our busy downtown core.

It is really very simple… doubling the lanes on Yonge Street will relieve the staggering gridlock caused by the current single north and southbound lane setup inflicted by the ActiveTO Pilot project.

Avenue Road is an ideal alternate route.  It is six lanes and logically can accommodate a dedicated lane for bikes.

The Toronto Cyclist Lobby is on record that they support the Yonge Street Bike Lane routing so their members can more conveniently access restaurants and shops.   A core reason why they are opposed to moving dedicated bike lanes to Avenue Road.   So the inconvenience and gridlock caused to everyone else along Yonge Street is clearly not their concern.

The silent majority are opposed to the direction our city has taken over the past two years to appease the powerful and well organized bike lane lobby.

Fortunately, the pendulum is swinging back in the direction of common sense.  The majority have had ENOUGH and are ready to take back our roadways at Toronto City Hall.

Four specific reasons why bike lanes need to be moved from Yonge Street to Avenue Road:

 • Unlike Avenue Road, the Yonge Street corridor between Bloor Street and Heath Street has 28 active development projects in the pipeline with 10,000 planned residential units and increasing construction-related blockages and truck traffic.

• Unlike Avenue Road, the Yonge Street corridor is flanked by landlocked communities on 18 streets with up to 5,000 residents, dependent on Yonge Street for access, including Toronto Fire and Emergency Management Services, who are endangered by gridlocks

 • Unlike Avenue Road, Yonge Street needs to accommodate shuttle buses during the frequent planned, and unplanned, subway closures which currently cause additional
congestion.

• Unlike Yonge Street, Avenue Road can accommodate both bike lanes and exclusive bus lanes, as required by TransformTO to reach the net zero climate change target.

BeRationalTO needs your financial support to launch a strong organized opposition to the ActiveTO bike lanes on Yonge Street.
