Veteran Memorial Restoration Eagle Scout Project

Donation protected
My name is Colin Bowker, a member of Salem Scout Troop 24 and, along with the Salem Veterans Council, I am working on my Eagle Scout Service Project. We are working together to dedicate and install a memorial for two important Salem veterans of the Revolutionary War. This memorial will be publicly dedicated this April 13th, at the start of the National Guard's annual Salem Muster. Note that the Veteran’s Council has provided the seed money for the fabrication and installation of this memorial, but an important aspect of an Eagle Scout Service Project is the fundraising.

The Location of the Memorial:
Who this will honor:
Captain Benjamin Peirce was the only minuteman from Salem to die while engaged at the Battles of Lexington and Concord on April 19, 1775. Though a memorial to Capt. Pierce was created in 1976, it was not in a visible location and is being mounted alongside the plaque for Major Stephen Abbot. UPDATE: This plaque has been removed and is being cleaned/prepped for its new installation.

Major General Stephen Abbot was a Salem merchant who became the leader of the scouts attached to General Washington’s headquarters. After the war he was appointed Major General of the Second Division, Massachusetts Militia. Though he played a vital role in several campaigns and battles, he has no memorial in his hometown.

Cost/Fundraising Goal: $14,727.06
The cost of this project includes new bronze production of the Stephen Abbot marker, the removal and refinishing the existing plaque for Captain Pierce, and the installation of both plaques along with the granite stone slab. The breakdown works out to be $3,039.56 for the new bronze plaque, and $11,687.50 for the granite stone cutting, polishing and overall installation.

Scout Troop 24 will be building the stone and cement foundation that the memorial will sit on top of. UPDATE: The foundation has been poured and the site is ready for installation!

All donations are tax-deductible, and funds raised above and beyond the cost of the memorial will be donated to the Salem Veterans Council. Thank you for your support!

This project has been approved by the Salem City Council.
