Believe in Baby Baldy : Derek and January’s IVF

Donation protected
They wheeled it out into the hallway on a metal cart. A sinister 14-pound tumor that remains to this day, the single most terrifying thing I have ever seen. It required a surgical team to pry it from its young host’s body and during the procedure; the entire right side (both tube and ovary) of my daughter January's reproductive system was sacrificed. She was 15 years old...

During recovery, my daughter became embarrassed that the doctor was talking to her about getting pregnant. That embarrassment has allowed her to never forget his exact words, and I quote, “You will have no problems getting pregnant when the time comes many, many, many years down the road.”

I too, asked the doctor about her ability to have a family immediately after being advised of what happened in surgery. He assured me she could conceive normally, even reminding me that you only get pregnant on the one side. Left or right, he said, you do not need both.

To trudge through all of the events that would follow in those many, many, many years down the road beginning with the years of complications from birth control to where she is today in trying to conceive is impossible to do here, but suffice it to say that they were filled with lots of prayer, tests upon tests, tears, depression, irregular cycles, hormone treatments, hope, more tears, ovulation stimulation medications, more prayer, hospitalization, ruptured cysts, more tears and a host of negative side effects that ultimately brought about the referral to a fertility Clinic, which has resulted in a recent diagnosis of endometrial uterine hyperplasia.

Step one they said is to check for tubal blockage. An ultrasound revealed this not to be the problem but did show uterine adhesions that would have to be surgically removed in order to provide optimal housing for a fetus. Two things were discovered during that procedure. The first, and the least of which, is the doctor’s inability to explain the unexplainable severity of scar tissue left behind from the Tumor and the second is the reason for this Go Fund Me page.

She endured all those years of unnecessary emotional and physical trauma. When my daughter was discharged from the hospital at the tender age of 15, she unknowingly left, without any possibility of conceiving a baby in the coming years down the road. The doctor had not removed the left side of her reproductive system as he had claimed but rather instead, he removed the ovary from the left side of her body and the tube from her right side, thus making it utterly impossible for her to ever get pregnant without the benefit of IVF.

IVF (invitro-fertilization) is extremely demanding. It is awfully expensive, it’s time consuming and it’s quite physically and emotionally challenging. Any one of these factors could be a deal breaker for someone my daughter’s age. And because she believed the doctor when he assured her, she could get pregnant, she continued to move forward in the faith that one day it would happen. Never did she imagine she was just wasting precious years trying to do the impossible. The tumor was removed 24 years ago. She is now 40 years old.

Their hearts long for a child of their own so deeply that I cannot adequately convey that desire. I couldn’t begin to color the words beautiful enough to paint what their life’s picture will look like with a child in it. It is their most fervent prayer, and you are their last hope.

If you know my daughter January’s husband Derek, then you know he was not at all comfortable with doing this page and his humble resignation of pride gives testimony to how much this man yearns to be a father. It is very awkward to depend on the monetary kindness of friends, family and especially that of strangers. It’s a sensitive subject, and the clock is ticking. Despite their hard work they cannot come close to the over $50,000 that’s needed.  It seems worth repeating here, again with the 50,000 dollars and time working against them, you truly are their last hope. If you are able to help, please do so with every confidence that your generosity will go into a separate IVF “all things baby” account and used solely for that purpose.

I’m asking first, look into your heart, then at all of your many blessings, and finally into your pocket. Miracles happen every day. With your financial support the miracle of birth for this truly deserving couple is just a thankful prayer away.
