We are raising funds for sheets, beds, and move-in costs for the formerly homeless residents at Casa Arabella.
This 94-unit new apartment building is located in the Fruitvale BART Station parking lot and is a partnership with the City of Oakland and two nonprofit organizations, East Bay Asian Local Development Corporation and The Unity Council.
We opened the doors to new residents last month, and it turns out 40 of the 94 households were formerly homeless, meaning most have arrived to their new home without the basics. And 20 of these homes were set aside for formerly homeless veterans.
WHAT DOES YOUR DONATION BUY
The use of this Go Fund Me is to collect quick donations to help buy furniture and assist with move-in costs. We are exploring additional resources to support residents, but it takes significant time, paperwork, and staffing to facilitate these connections. Meanwhile many residents are going without the basics:
$50 buys a sheet set and pillows
$250 buys a bed + delivery
$500 assists with move-in costs for one family (security deposits, first month rent)
Or any amount will make a difference
No pressure to participate, as we know so many of you have already given thousands in sweat equity to get this project off the ground, or have provided cheerleading along the way.
Just opening the door for an opportunity to support the homeless community on an individual basis. I had the privilege to greet a number of the families as they were signing leases, and their journeys are heartfelt.
**All proceeds will go to the Resident Services Program that is helping residents at Casa Arabella transition to their new home.**
