“My name is Lama… this is my story”

My name is Lama. I’m 20 years old. Today, I live with my 15-year-old brother, Ali, and my baby boy who was born during the war.

We used to live a simple, happy life in our small home in northern Gaza. It was a warm place filled with love. My mother would cook for us and keep us safe, my father worked hard for our future, my sisters Jana and Manal shared everything with me, and my oldest brother Atta was our protector and our joy. My youngest brother Ali was my closest companion.

Everything changed in a moment.

When the war escalated, I had to evacuate with my husband and my baby, while my family took refuge in a relative’s house in the north. Communication was completely cut off. Two days passed two days that felt like forever until the devastating news came: the house was targeted.

I lost my mother. My father. Jana, Manal, and Atta. All of them

Only my little brother Ali survived—by a miracle. He dug through the rubble with his bare hands searching for our family.

After the fighting stopped, we returned to what was left of our home… just stones and ashes. Since then, I’ve been trying to survive, to care for my baby, to be a sister, a mother, and a provider.

Every day I wake up with grief, with the sound of my baby’s cry, and the worry of how to feed him, how to get him milk.

All I want now is a chance to start over.

I want to travel with my brother and my small family, to find safety, a future, and maybe a way to heal.
