The senseless deaths of George Floyd in Minnesota, Ahmaud Arbery in Georgia, and Breonna Taylor in Kentucky—and so many more, too many more across our nation—have created overdue conversations about race, justice, and equality in the United States. Although we are saddened by the deep pain and division that has recently been on display, we are heartened that so many people—including those in our Birmingham community—have raised their voices in these trying times to advocate for necessary societal change. As lawyers in Birmingham, Alabama, known to many as the cradle of the Civil Rights Movement, we recognize our unique obligation to promote equality and racial justice and combat the evils of racism and prejudice whenever and wherever they appear.
As a demonstration of our commitment to being part of the solution, we are proud to announce that the YLS will match our members' donations to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund up to $3,000. Of the $3,000 we have pledged to commit, $1,470 came from our YLS Executive Committee members personally. We hope you will consider joining us with a donation, however large or small, to this important cause. The NAACP Legal Defense Fund is America’s premier legal organization fighting for racial justice, and the organization “seeks structural changes to expand democracy, eliminate disparities, and achieve racial justice in a society that fulfills the promise of equality for all Americans.” For more information about the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, please visit their website at https://www.naacpldf.org/.
The purposes of the Birmingham Bar Association include facilitating the administration of justice, promoting needed reform in the law, and increasing the legal profession’s usefulness in promoting the due administration of justice. We hope that this donation marks a critical step in our efforts to achieve racial equality, to further our Bar Association’s founding principles, and to demonstrate the Young Lawyers Section’s commitment to justice.
