Lifting Liberia - Building a bathroom for a village

My name is Sandy Ferrell, and in ten days I’ll be traveling to Liberia with a group of medical professionals. While there, we’ll be doing humanitarian work and bringing school supplies to children.

Liberia is a country where 84% of the people live on just $1.25 a day. In one small village of about 200 people, I learned something that really touched my heart—there are no bathroom facilities. Everyone, young and old, has to go into the trees and bush to use the restroom.

When I first started working with this village, we talked about creating a community garden. But when I asked what they truly needed, they said their biggest hope was for a community bathroom—something they would help build themselves. They’ve already planned it out: two stalls (one for men and one for women) and a small shower, using water from the nearby river. The cost for materials is $15,000.

I’ve seen firsthand how committed and resourceful they are. Not long ago, we sent just $900, and with that, they built a roof for two widows in the village. They keep their promises and put their hearts into everything they do.

These are kind, hardworking people who deserve not just a bathroom, but the dignity that comes with it. My dream is to arrive in ten days and tell them the funds are ready, so together we can make this a reality.
