I'm raising money for the Bastrop County African American Cultural Center & Freedom Colonies Museum because I believe so deeply in the importance of the work they do. Their mission is to collect, safeguard, and share untold stories about 'freedom colonies,' historic Black settlements established in Texas after Emancipation by people who were formerly enslaved. These stories are a significant part of American history that has remained invisible in our classrooms and textbooks, but the museum aims to rectify that. By amplifying the voices of Bastrop, Texas freedom colony descendants, the museum's all-volunteer staff has been able to create interpretative displays and programs that offer a fuller and more accurate view of the past.
I started volunteering full-time last August to help where I can with research, grant writing, and oral history collection. But it’s a challenge to both continue the work and keep the doors open. Your donation, at any level that you can afford, will impact the museum's efforts in 2023/24. Thank you in advance for your contribution to this small historical museum that means so much to me.
