I am Secretary of Friends of Barshaw Park, in Paisley.
On Saturday evening, 6 March, a bench in the seating area within the Walled Peace Garden was destroyed by vandals. A large terracotta pot was also damaged and the plants pulled out. The damage is especially saddening as the bench was gifted to the garden as a memorial by a local person who had lost a loved one. The plant pot and plants were donated by one of our members.
The Walled Peace Garden is maintained by volunteers, who are members of Friends of Barshaw Park.
We aim to ensure that Barshaw Park is a safe and welcoming space, and we deliver educational and entertaining events to the community. The Walled Peace Garden is a relaxing and peaceful spot to visit, and it has become more popular during the last 12 months as during the Covid pandemic our community has been seeking out calming and interesting walks in Paisley.
We are disappointed that a few people have sought to destroy part of the garden, but we will not be daunted, by this setback and we will do our best to replace the seating.
These wooden benches are expensive, costing around £1500. We may have to consider replacing the vandalised one with a metal or stone version, however, as they would be more damage resistant.
I hope you will make a small donation to our cause, but we also appreciate donations of your time. If you would like to join our team as a volunteer, committee member, or trustee, Please contact us at [email redacted]
