BAP Needs You!

Donation protected
For 14 years, the Black Arts Production Theatre (BAP) has been a vital part of our community, creating a platform for Black artists to express their voices and stories.

Through various productions, workshops, and community events, BAP has not only enriched our cultural landscape but also provided invaluable opportunities for local talent. Their commitment to fostering a vibrant and inclusive artistic community has made a significant impact on many lives, from aspiring actors to seasoned performers.

Now, facing an unjust eviction from the Bernie Grant Arts Centre (BGAC), BAP needs your support to continue their essential work. Your contribution will help us fight this eviction, cover impending legal costs, and ensure that BAP remains a cornerstone of our community for years to come.

BAP faces eviction on Friday 7th June 2024, due to what we feel is an unfair price increase with major contract changes. BGAC has increased the office rent from £420 to £540 for six months and then it will be £600 per month—two tenants at the Enterprise Building have already had to pack up and leave. This is shameful. There is pressure from the centre to sign an unfair one-year contract, which was originally a three-year contract.

Losing our office means a hold on applying for funding for our projects, which is critical to the Black Arts Production Theatre Ltd.

The late Bernie Grant MP was not only our MP of Tottenham, he was a big supporter of BAP, and made sure his diary was clear to attend our events. He shortened our name to BAP, and asked us to be part of the community consultation group in establishing the BGAC. He told us:

"The BGAC is there for you, a place of where your actors can perform."

BAP is requesting BGAC to:
1. Stop the eviction.
2. Negotiate a fair price increase of 7%.
3. Revert to a three-year contract for office space.
4. Allow BAP and local groups fair access and fair rent to the theatre.
5. Live up to the original idea to support and employ local people.

The Black Arts Production Theatre (BAP) thanks Pauline Campbell - Legal Advisor for Justice4Windrush and all those supporting BAP. You can read the full public statement here.
