My name is Whitney Connor, and I am coordinating this fundraiser to take deserving elementary students to the Gilbert Fire & Rescue Department's annual Back to School Shopping Event at Kohl's. I've been volunteering at this event since I was in elementary school. This event has had a major impact on my life, and has helped shape the person I am today. Now that I am older, I want to do more to help out, which is why I have created the non-profit Bands 4 Backpacks.

This will be the 20th anniversary of this incredible event that was started by Jean Sperke of the Gilbert Fire & Rescue Department.

Each year, school counselors submit the names of kids in need to be able to "Shop with a Firefighter". Each kid is given a $150 Kohl's gift card and then shops with a firefighter to pick out back to school clothes and supplies. There are so many kids that I've met through this event over the years who have never had their own pair of shoes and have only received hand-me-down clothes from their siblings.

This wonderful event allows these kids to get $150 worth of their own clothes to start the new school year on a brighter path. For every $150 I raise, another kid will get to be a part of this. Each year the fire department takes about 50 kids who have been nominated by their school counselors.

I want to be able to take even more kids, so I've created Bands 4 Backpacks, a non-profit that will use 100% of its proceeds towards sending more kids.
