A small group of community volunteers has been working on plans to breathe new life into Bamfield's West Park, a short jaunt from the government dock in west Bamfield. At present, the park features a grassy playing field, a forested section, a little community garden, some very basic playground equipment, picnic tables, and a peek-a-boo ocean view.
The team has been dreaming up new features to complement existing assets and increase the usability of this valuable public space. An off-grid pavilion with protection from rain and prevailing winds is central to the revitalization concept. Given the stark absence of any covered public space in west Bamfield, a pavilion opens a myriad of possibilities for informal community use (a place for coffee out of the rain, a base for children's activities, a meeting place for friends and neighbours for yoga, contemplation and more) and sets the stage for organized activities like artisan fairs and other welcoming community events, rain or shine.
Two major grants have been applied for to fulfill our dreams. So far, one has been successful, and we await news from the other. However, we still need some extra financial support to complete the whole envisioned development such as wooden play structures in the forest, interpretive signs, a composting toilet and landscaping.
We want the park to be a place that residents and visitors alike can fully enjoy. Please help us.
Contributions of financial support to bring this all to fruition this year are appreciated!
