Hi my name is Jane and I belong to Beckery Island Regeneration Trust. I'm fundraising for match funding for the restoration of the surviving cast iron windows in the Baily's Buildings in Glastonbury.
We are currently restoring the Baily's Buildings on the Morland's site in Glastonbury.
The wider project brief is to rejuvenate the Baily’s Buildings and bring them back into use for the Beckery Island Regeneration Trust (BIRT), providing a mix of community and workspaces.
Cast metal windows began to be developed by the mid c18th, and commonly emulated traditional timber sash windows. Towards the end of the century, the appeal of the window type had spread and was becoming universally common, used in housing as well as factory, utility, Government and institutional buildings.
The buildings have been vacant now for several decades and have been subject to extensive vandalism and fire damage during this period. Much of the original fabric has been damaged, and is being repaired wherever possible. The refurbishment and re-use of the surviving cast iron windows are a vital part of this.
