Hi dear community!
As many of you know, Eva and Alli are deep in the process of trying to start a family. They have been trying to conceive for a year and a half now, and this journey has taken them from at-home insemination to IUI. They have navigated the complex and still-developing world of queer family making with grace and humor and so much tenderness and love. This little being is so enormously loved already!
Despite it being a labor of love, it is also quite costly. After trying to conceive for a little over a year, Eva received a diagnosis of PCOS which has changed the landscape of their conception process. They are now trying to conceive by IUI (Intra-uterine Insemination), along with hormones to help support Eva’s system (along with the bajillion supplements she’s taking…and acupuncture…and dietary changes).
Prior to Eva's PCOS diagnosis, they had spent nearly $8,000 on plane tickets flying their donor, Scott back and forth from the East Coast, lawyer fees, lab work, miscellaneous appointments, and too many ovulation predictor kits to count. After a year of trying at home, they switched gears and decided to freeze Scott's sperm and try IUI, which was a large added cost and will give them the opportunity for 3 rounds of IUI. If they do not get pregnant within those 3 cycles, they will need to go through the freezing process again which will, unfortunately, mean paying for the OHSU costs all over again.
Just to get a sense of what they're working with, here is a breakdown of the costs they are experiencing right now (this is in addition to the $8,000 they already spent trying at home last year):
IUI: $500
Trigger Shot: $190
Hormones and supplements: $130
Sperm pick-up: $80
Total: $900 per IUI (3 guaranteed)
OHSU costs:
Freezing sperm: $700
Required mental evaluation: $950
Required tests: $550
Sperm deposit: $450
FDA screening and OHSU management fee: $1500
Total: $4150
Watching them pour their hearts into this process, and witnessing the ups and downs – the hope and despair – inherent in trying to conceive for so long, I know has left many of us wishing there was some way we could offer our support. So we decided to start this GoFundMe. As much as I wish we could just raise enough money and buy them a baby, this fundraiser will be used to offset many of the costs they have incurred in this lengthy process, and those still to come. Any little bit helps.
