Many of you have read Crystal and Dom’s Facebook post that explains their 5-month-old daughter’s disease called Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA). This is a fatal neuromuscular disease that causes children to lose muscle over time normally not typically living past 18 months. As any parent understands taking care of a new baby (especially your first) can make even the calmest parents a bit nervous. Crystal the health enthusiast had the most beautiful pregnancy while being supported by her dedicated husband Dom. So when they received the news about their baby girl you could only imagine the fears and the unknown that followed. They quickly dove into the facts to better understand the disease, met with countless doctors to see what would be the next steps for their daughter. Ava was so fortunate to get treatment but this is only the beginning of the care that she will need. 

There will be many doctor appointments and needs that have to be met to ensure Ava thrives. With Crystal out of work and Dom being the sole provider for his family, expenses will add up. Dom works for the NY metro and has had to take unpaid FMLA to be by his daughter’s side while she underwent surgery and was hospitalized for a few weeks and will continue to need more time off in the future to help be a partner in her care.
