Orphanages in Madagascar

Talatamaty orphanage (en)

The Talatamaty orphanage is run by a lady named Olga. She has 65 children there. She is already 68 years old. has a big heart and does what she can.

The house is bursting at the seams. There were beds but no mattresses and many children slept on the floor. I have already delivered 25 mattresses there.

Ms. Olga never says "no". She really takes in all children who need help. She also has babies who are very sick.
There are about 11 infants. A baby has kidney problems. Unfortunately, the children often have fleas because there is really a lack of everything.
Food and hygiene. My wish is to help the orphanage so that it becomes like At Home. Because of your help, it became almost autonomous.
The orphanage is located near the capital. You have girls who are already 12 years old. They sleep in a small room on the floor and lock the door so that no one comes in at night and rapes them.

Unfortunately, that is the order of the day here.
I would like to help renovate the children's home and improve the quality of life for the children.
At the moment everyone is living from one day to the next. The food is prepared in an outdoor kitchen. The kitchen is not suitable for 65 people.
There is also a larger room in which most of the children could normally eat, but it is more than dilapidated and it is raining in.
We are currently trying to buy a small piece of land and plant a vegetable garden there so that the children can take in a few vitamins and nutrients as well as rice.

We would also like to cover the kitchen. We are now in the rainy season and if it rains, then right. In addition, we would like to buy pots and whatever else belongs in a kitchen. We would also like to renovate the "hall". Repairing the ceiling, etc., so that the children can eat there and when it rains they can also play.
I would like to do it like in our other orphanage. First of all, make sure that the children have enough to eat and that they have a dry and safe place to sleep. That is, I want to start with the vegetable garden first. I also want to buy chickens so that we can at least eat eggs. Then I would like to have the kitchen covered so that you can prepare food there in the rainy season. When we have that, I'd like to have the roof repaired and the broken windows replaced.

At Home project

Madagascar is one of the 5 poorest countries in the world. 70 percent of the population is under 20 years old.

Alone in Antananarivo, the capital, almost half have no access to sanitary facilities.

Nevertheless, Madagascar is the country of laughter.

I have seldom seen so many smiling faces, such helpful and extremely polite people.
The crime rate is very low. Despite the poverty.

There are many orphanages in Madagascar. One reason for this is the high maternal mortality rate during childbirth. Another reason is that in some areas twins are considered "bad luck charms" and are often killed after birth or taken to an orphanage.

The women here do not use contraception and some women leave their children behind if they cannot feed them.

I decided to help At Home because it is the best orphanage that I have visited so far. The children are all sent to school.

In addition, Mr. Hasina tries to ensure that the children eat properly. Most of the children in Madagascar have bad teeth - they are completely or partially missing because the diet is very one-sided and often inadequate. This hinders normal development, especially in small children.

At Home is one of the few orphanages that think sustainably. The children go to school and learn to take on tasks for the group at an early age. When I was there, an 8-year-old ironed all the laundry with an iron that we think belongs in the museum. A little boy washed all the laundry by hand. Only very privileged people have a washing machine in Madagascar.

Hasina has developed a system with a fish pond. The water that is secreted there is rich in nutrients, thanks to the excretions of the fish. This water is passed through pipes in which lettuce and vegetables are grown. The effect is awesome. The water is cleaned by this natural filter and can be drunk and the fish water serves as irrigation and fertilizer at the same time.

How did it all start?

I have joined my Partner (who works at the french Embassy) to Madagaskar. I would like to make the most out of my time in Madagaskar and help as much as I can. Through various actions I have already raised a good amount of money.

I asked Hasina, who runs the orphanage with his wife, what he needs.

He prefers to get things directly instead of money. He wanted shoes for the 21 children, 10 mattresses, rice, oil and soap.

The French embassy helped finance his construction work. He is building to make room for another 10 children. The children all say mum and dad to him and his wife. I think that's really nice.

I asked him to ask the children what their greatest wish is. The most common answer was: a bicycle.
But other wishes were also on the list.

A 4 year old wishes to be able to speak French. Last week I found a French woman here who is a teacher.
She is here because her husband has a job here for 3 years. She was very enthusiastic about the request and volunteered to teach the children free of charge.

I've rarely been as touched as in the past few weeks. I've never asked for money and still get so much help for the children.
From my sports friends from Germany, from friends who would like to help and now finally have a point of contact that they trust. Even within the country. Have already received a lot of curtains. Also pillows, a scooter and a bike.

I'm looking forward to bringing the things to the children. They were so happy about the shoes. I'm excited to see their faces when I bring the bike.

Thanks to the money I received, the cultivation is now continuing. I was able to buy a total of 128 bags of cement.

Hasina does everything herself. He asks e.g. not for money for beds, but for wood and then builds the beds himself.

I was asked why I only help an orphanage and not e.g. Buy rice for 100 orphanages. In my opinion, it is better to help one person properly than to help so many only a little.
Rice is eaten at some point and hunger comes back. What Hasina and his wife have created is sustainable. Education remains, his system for a vegetable garden is a long-term guarantee that the children will eat enough vitamins.

Thank you very much for considering to help our little project. I will keep you updated with Pictures and videos. The children will be greatfull.
