Suing under the name, “Let Them Breathe”, Otsego County, MI parents are fighting to stop the harmful masking of our school children. Our group is in active litigation against the Health Department of Northwest Michigan, that dropped a mask mandate on us the weekend before school started in September, 2021, and Gaylord Community Schools that has agreed to enforce the mask mandate despite overwhelming support in the community against masking our children.

“Let Them Breathe” is seeking financial contributions from like-minded, freedom loving people that see the harm these masks are causing our children. We have an excellent, courageous attorney fighting for us. The Health Department and School have a combined total of 6 attorneys working against us, who are all being paid with taxpayer dollars.

Our group has already spent thousands of dollars and we need help to continue our fight. We do not want to quit due to the financial strain this puts on our families. We are community members and professionals in fields such as medicine, law, education and small business owners. We have lost clients, work, and jobs over our fight. But, we are determined parents fighting for our children, who are suffering physically and psychologically. We WILL end this madness, but we need your help!

How We Got Here:

Prior to the start of the 2021 school year, our local School Board, after seeking parent input, devised a mask-optional back-to-school policy. However, on the Friday evening before the 2021 school year was to begin, the Health Department of Northwest Michigan dropped a mask mandate and ordered the schools to enforce it, by using “any and all reasonable and necessary enforcement procedures”.

On September 3rd, a group of Gaylord High students organized a sit-in in the common area of the school, in opposition to the mask policy. Perhaps you saw the video on YouTube of the local police being brought in to escort kids out of the building? The intimidation and fear being used against our kids, who simply want to breathe while they are at school for 7 hours, 5 days/week, is outrageous. In Michigan, the mask mandate only applies to kids in school. The ones with the least susceptibility to the effects of covid, are the same ones being punished. This does not make sense and it has harmful effects on our kids!

Our legal fight started in September, 2021 and has been a bumpy ride of being bounced from court to court. As you can imagine, it has been a stressful and disappointing ride of just getting to a place where our arguments can be heard. We are now in that place.

As you can imagine, with 6 attorneys working against our 1, our costs continue to go up. We believe that to be a strategy of the other side. We know they want us to drop this lawsuit, which we will NOT do. But, we need help. We appreciate any contribution you can make. We hope to win this lawsuit and share the path forward to other communities dealing with this same issue. Our kids need us to stay in this fight.
