We are the participants of the Ecovillage Youth Exchange (EYE) project 2022: Fatima, Mara, Clara, Serigne, Emma, Mouhamed, Paula & Juri.

Together with you, we want to unite the strive for a sustainable future on this planet with social and racial justice globally. Your contribution makes a difference!

By the end of this campaign, 10 young adults from the African and the European continent will have built a strong partnership to drive change, in our communities and in the world.

Imagine a small group of people from Senegal and Germany, meeting for the first time this July in the ecovillage Sonnenwald in the Black Forest in Southern Germany - no shops, no mobile connection. Just the community, their farm, us and our project themes: ecological living, youth empowerment and racial and social justice.

We quickly realised that the “clash of cultures” is not a myth: the difficulty of not sharing a (native) language, different social and financial backgrounds, diverse food cultures. We had diverse ways of dealing with conflict, or gender....

It was a bumpy start!

But isn’t this exactly what we wanted to learn and share about? We experienced a real-life demonstration of how our different backgrounds, the (colonial) histories of our countries and the huge global inequalities shape our realities, and our relationships to each other! And perhaps a glimpse of what it takes to bridge the gap, to find healing and reconciliation…

How can you support us?

After our first meeting in Germany this July, we want to meet again in Senegal in December to continue the journey of exploration - and to create a media collage to document and share what we have learned and experienced!

What is EYE?

EYE (Ecovillage Youth Exchange) is an exchange project for young adults involved or interested in the ecovillage movements in Africa and Europe. where we explore steps towards healing and reconciliation between and within the two continents. We focus on empowerment of youth through skill-building and exchange of knowledge around ecological living, education and project development, working towards a regenerative and community-oriented future.

EYE is also the first collaborative project between the Global Ecovillage Networks of Africa (GEN Africa) and Europe (GEN Europe).

What has happened so far?

In July and August 2022, a group of 3 young Senegalese and 5 young Germans met for 25 days at the community Sonnenwald in Southern Germany.

Our first steps were getting to know each other - Who are we? Where do we come from? What are our dreams? How do we develop a daily rhythm together that respects our cultural background and yet allows us to cook, eat, clean, assemble, share from our hearts, laugh, dance, play football and discuss all together?

With our group leader, the community members of Sonnenwald and some wonderful trainers that took the long way to Sonnenwald, we went through a full workshop programme and attempted to weave our topics together in a complex and diverse picture of ourselves in the world: From the principles of permaculture and regenerative agriculture to hands-on work at the Sonnenwald farm (mulching the veggies and harvesting first potatoes of the season). From the House of Modernity (credits to Vanessa Andreotti) and the Power Flower to asking ourselves: How does colonialism and racism impact us today? In our daily lives, in our relationships, and in this very project? And how can healing happen? From hearing about the Sustainable Development Goal #11 and global ecovillage movement from a South-North perspective to discussing what “community” means for us with the community members at Sonnenwald. From Dragon Dreaming (credits to John Croft and Vivienne Elanta) to planning our reunion in Senegal.

What more will happen?

In November/December 2022 we will meet again at an ecovillage in Senegal (most probably Bambay Serere) and continue our journey of learning and exchange. Two more Senegalese participants will join us there. This time, we want to focus on (post)colonialism and racism and systems of oppression that affect us and our activism until today. We want to explore approaches to sustainable living (natural building, dryland agriculture, tree planting,...) that are implemented in Senegal, and continue our exchange about culture, community, traditions and change.

The highlight: we want to travel to the GEN Africa Conference in the Gambia, and creatively present the EYE project and our learnings there!

All along our journey, we are working on a project to document and disseminate our learnings in a media collage of photos, videos and text. We are looking forward to sharing this with you!

What will your money do?

You want to be part of the project and support us? Great!

The EYE project has a budget of appr. 48.000€. ~35.500€ are covered by Teams up! Jugendbegegnungen, a funding programme of the German Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). We were able to raise another ~6500€ from the Stiftung Freie Gemeinschaftsbank (SFG), Stiftung Umverteilen! and private donations.

8.000€ are still open!

The largest bunch of costs are flights, food and accommodation for the participants for the two visits in Germany and Senegal. Smaller amounts go into materials and local transport, as well as allowances for the coordination team, group leaders and facilitators.

With 5€, you can cover a block of flipchart paper and pens for us to materialise our dreams and ideas.

With 10€, we can pay one night at the ecovillage in Senegal for one participant.

50€ pays the travel health insurance for one participant.

100€ affords us a translator for Wolof-French-English for 2 days (which we will need!)

250€ covers food and drinks for one participant during our visit in Senegal.

500€ pays our minivan to travel around Senegal and explore ecovillages, memorial sites and visit each other’s homes.

900€ will pay for a flight ticket (round trip Dakar - Munich) for one participant.

Top it up with 41€ to compensate for the CO2 emissions of our trip!

Any amount that comes in as a surplus to our budget will go to our wonderful trainers, group leaders and coordinators, who have done a lot of work for free!

How did the EYE project come to life?

The idea for an ecovillage exchange for young people across continents was first spun by Philip and Sonja-Vera, two community founders and GEN members from Kenya and Switzerland. They planted their seed into the fertile soil of a small group of initiators - Herman, Sonita and Julia. Together with a circle of up to 20 people involved in GEN, Next GEN and the permaculture movement, the vision of the project was created in 2019 - now centering strongly around the core topics of regenerative living, racial and social justice, and youth empowerment. It took us three years to secure funding from Teams up!, outlast the travel restrictions of the COVID pandemic and assemble a spirited coordination team… until EYE is finally happening in 2022!

Where do we want to go?

EYE wants to happen again! In the next cycles of the exchange project, we want to involve youth from more African and European countries and deepen our exchange. Our vision is to weave a network of well-informed and connected youth that bring the conversation on global justice topics into the ecovillage movement!

Hallo liebe Welt!

Wir sind die Teilnehmer*innen des Ecovillage Youth Exchange (EYE) Projekts 2022: Fatima, Mara, Clara, Serigne, Emma, Mouhamed, Paula & Juri.

Gemeinsam mit euch, wollen wir die Bewegung hin zu einer nachhaltigen Zukunft auf diesem Planeten mit dem Streben nach sozialer Gerechtigkeit und dem Ende von Rassismus weltweit vereinen. Dein Beitrag macht einen Unterschied!

Zum Ende unseres Projekts werden 10 junge Erwachsene aus Senegal und aus Deutschland eine starke Partnerschaft aufgebaut haben, um Veränderungen in unseren Gemeinschaften und in der Welt voranzutreiben.

Stell dir eine kleine Gruppe von jungen Menschen aus Senegal und Deutschland vor, die sich im Juli dieses Jahres zum ersten Mal im Ökodorf Sonnenwald im Nordschwarzwald treffen - ohne Geschäfte, ohne Mobilfunkverbindung. Nur die Gemeinschaft, ihr Bauernhof, wir und unsere Projektthemen: ökologisches Leben, Stärkung der Jugend, soziale Gerechtigkeit und Antirassismus.

Wir merken schnell, dass der "Kulturschock" kein Mythos ist: wir haben keine gemeinsame (Mutter-)Sprache, unterschiedliche soziale und finanzielle Hintergründe, verschiedene Esskulturen, verschiedene Arten, mit Konflikten und mit kulturellen Geschlechterrollen umzugehen…

Es war ein holpriger Start!

Aber ist es nicht genau das, worüber wir lernen und uns austauschen wollten? An unserem eigenen Beispiel erlebten wir, wie unsere unterschiedlichen Hintergründe, die (kolonialen) Geschichten unserer Länder und die enormen globalen Ungerechtigkeiten unsere Sichtweisen und unsere Beziehung zueinander prägen! Und vielleicht überkam uns auch eine Ahnung davon, was es braucht, um diese Kluft zu überbrücken, um Heilung und Versöhnung zu finden...

Wie kannst du uns unterstützen?

Nach unserem ersten Treffen in Deutschland im Juli dieses Jahres, wollen wir uns im Dezember im Senegal treffen, um unsere Erkundungsreise fortzusetzen - und um in einer multimedialen Collage zu dokumentieren und zu teilen, was wir gelernt und erlebt haben!

Was ist EYE?

EYE (Ecovillage Youth Exchange / Ökodorf-Jugendaustausch) ist ein Austauschprojekt für junge Erwachsene, die in der Ökodorf-Bewegung in Afrika und Europa aktiv oder daran interessiert sind. Mit diesem Austausch möchten wir Schritte hin zur Heilung und Versöhnung zwischen und innerhalb der beiden Kontinente erkunden. Unsere Schwerpunktthemen sind youth empowerment durch gemeinsames Lernen und Wissensaustausch über ökologisches Leben, Bildung und Projektentwicklung. Unser Ziel ist eine regenerative und gemeinschaftsorientierte Zukunft.

EYE ist auch das erste Kooperationsprojekt zwischen dem Ökodorf-Netzwerk Afrika (GEN Africa) und dem Ökodorf-Netzwerk Europa (GEN Europe).

Was bisher geschah…

Im Juli und August 2022 traf sich eine Gruppe von 3 jungen Senegales*innen und 5 jungen Menschen aus Deutschland für 25 Tage in der Gemeinschaft Sonnenwald in Süddeutschland.

Unsere ersten Schritte waren das gegenseitige Kennenlernen - Wer sind wir? Woher kommen wir? Was sind unsere Träume? Wie entwickeln wir einen gemeinsamen Tagesrhythmus, der unseren kulturellen Hintergrund respektiert und es uns dennoch ermöglicht, gemeinsam zu kochen, zu essen, zu putzen, uns zu versammeln, von Herzen zu teilen, zu lachen, zu tanzen, Fußball zu spielen und zu diskutieren?

Mit unserer Gruppenleiterin, den Bewohner*innen der Gemeinschaft Sonnenwald und einigen wunderbaren Trainerinnen, die den weiten Weg nach Sonnenwald auf sich genommen haben, hatten wir ein volles Workshop-Programm. Unsere Themen konnten wir zu einem komplexen und vielfältigen Bild von uns selbst in der Welt verweben: von den Prinzipien der Permakultur und der regenerativen Landwirtschaft bis hin zur praktischen Arbeit auf dem Hof Sonnenwald (Gemüse mulchen und die ersten Kartoffeln der Saison ernten). Vom Haus der Moderne (Vanessa Andreotti) und der Power Flower bis hin zu den Fragen, die wir uns ganz persönlich stellen: Wie wirken sich Kolonialismus und Rassismus heute auf uns aus - in unserem täglichen Leben, in unseren Beziehungen und in diesem Projekt? Und wie passiert eigentlich Heilung? Vom globalen Ziel für Nachhaltige Entwicklung #11 (Nachhaltige Städte und Siedlungen) zur Betrachtung der globalen Ökodorf-Bewegung aus einer Süd-Nord-Perspektive, bis hin zum Austausch mit den Mitgliedern der Gemeinschaft Sonnenwald. Von Dragon Dreaming (John Croft und Vivienne Elanta) bis hin zur Planung unseres Wiedersehens in Senegal.

Und was passiert jetzt?

Im November/Dezember 2022 werden wir uns in einem Ökodorf im Senegal (wahrscheinlich Bambay Serere) treffen und unsere Lern- und Austauschreise fortsetzen. Zwei neue senegalesische Teilnehmer*innen werden dort zur Gruppe stoßen. Dieses Mal wollen wir uns besonders mit (Post-)Kolonialismus, Rassismus und den Unterdrückungssystemen beschäftigen, die uns und unseren Engagement für die Welt bis heute beeinflussen. Wir wollen Ansätze für ein nachhaltiges Leben erkunden, die im Senegal umgesetzt werden (natürliches Bauen, Permakultur, Baumpflanzungen...), und unseren Austausch über Kultur, Gemeinschaft, Tradition und Wandel fortsetzen.

Der Höhepunkt: Wir wollen zur GEN-Afrika-Konferenz nach Gambia reisen und dort das EYE-Projekt und unsere Erkenntnisse vorstellen!

Während unserer gesamten Reise arbeiten wir an einem Projekt, um unsere Erfahrungen in einer multimedialen Collage aus Fotos, Videos und Texten zu dokumentieren und zu verbreiten. Wir freuen uns darauf, dies mit dir zu teilen!

Was bewirkt dein Geld?

Du möchtest dich am EYE Projekt beteiligen und uns unterstützen? Toll!

Das EYE Projekt hat ein Budget von ca. 48.000€. Davon werden ca. 35.500€ durch Teams up! Jugendbegegnungen, einem Förderprogramm des Bundesministeriums für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung (BMZ) übernommen. Weitere ca. 6500€ konnten wir von der Stiftung Freie Gemeinschaftsbank (SFG), der Stiftung Umverteilen! und privaten Spenden einwerben.

8.000€ sind noch offen!

Der größte Teil der Kosten fällt auf Flüge, Verpflegung und Unterkunft für die Teilnehmenden während der beiden Besuche in Deutschland und Senegal. Kleinere Beträge fließen in Material, den Transport vor Ort sowie in Aufwandsentschädigungen für das Koordinationsteam, die Gruppenleitungen und Trainer*innen.

Mit 5 € kannst du einen Block Flipchart-Papier und Stifte bezahlen, auf dem wir unsere Träume und Ideen verwirklichen können.

Mit 10 € können wir eine Übernachtung im Ökodorf im Senegal für eine Person bezahlen.

50 € kostet die Reisekrankenversicherung für eine*n Teilnehmer*in.

Mit 100 € können wir uns eine*n Übersetzer*in (Wolof-Französisch-Englisch) für 2 Tage leisten (was wir brauchen werden!)

250 € decken die Kosten für Essen und Getränke für eine*n Teilnehmer*in während unseres Besuchs im Senegal.

500 € kostet die Miete eines Kleinbus’, mit dem wir durch Senegal fahren, Ökodörfer und Gedenkstätten erkunden und die Familien der senegalesischen Teilnehmenden besuchen werden.

900 € kostet für ein Flugticket (Hin- und Rückflug Dakar - München) für eine*n Teilnehmer*.

Wenn du noch 41 € drauf legst, können wir auch die CO2-Emissionen unserer Reise kompensieren!

Jeder Betrag, der zusätzlich zum benötigten Budget reinkommt, geht an unsere wunderbaren Trainer*innen, Gruppenleitungen, Koordinator*innen, die eine Menge Arbeit umsonst leisten!

Wie ist das EYE Projekt entstanden?

Die Idee eines kontinentübergreifenden Ökodorf-Austauschs für junge Menschen entstand im freundschaftlichen Austausch zwischen Philip und Sonja-Vera, zwei Gemeinschaftsgründer*innen und langjährigen GEN-Mitgliedern aus Kenia und der Schweiz. Sie pflanzten ihre Idee in den fruchtbaren Boden einer kleinen Gruppe von Initiator*innen - Herman, Sonita und Julia. Zusammen mit einer Gruppe von bis zu 20 Personen, die bei GEN, NextGEN und in der Permakultur-Bewegung engagiert sind, entstand 2019 die Vision des Projekts. Diese dreht sich nun stark um die Kernthemen regeneratives Leben, soziale Gerechtigkeit und Antirassismus und youth empowerment. Wir haben drei Jahre gebraucht, um die Finanzierung durch Teams up! zu sichern, die Reisebeschränkungen der COVID-Pandemie zu überstehen und ein engagiertes Koordinationsteam zusammenzustellen... bis EYE 2022 endlich stattfindet!

Wohin wollen wir?

EYE will wieder stattfinden! In den nächsten Zyklen des Pojekts wollen wir junge Menschen aus mehr afrikanischen und europäischen Ländern einbeziehen und den thematischen Austausch vertiefen. Unsere Vision ist ein Netzwerk von gut informierten und vernetzten jungen Menschen, die die Diskussion um globale Gerechtigkeit in die Ökodorfbewegung einbringen!

Nous sommes les participants du projet 2022 de l'Echange de jeunes d'écovillages (EJE) : Fatima, Mara, Clara, Serigne, Emma, Mouhamed, Paula et Juri.

Avec vous, nous voulons poursuire un avenir soutenable sur cette planète et la justice sociale et raciale au niveau mondial. Votre contribution fait la différence !

A la fin de cette campagne, 10 jeunes adultes des continents africain et européen auront construit un partenariat fort pour conduire le changement, dans nos communautés et dans le monde.

Imaginez un petit groupe de personnes originaires du Sénégal et d'Allemagne, se réunissant pour la première fois en juillet dans l'écovillage de Sonnenwald, dans la Forêt-Noire, dans le sud de l'Allemagne - sans magasins, sans connexion mobile. Juste la communauté, sa ferme, nous et les thèmes de notre projet : vie écologique, autonomisation des jeunes et justice sociale et raciale.

Nous nous sommes rapidement rendu compte que le "choc des cultures" n'est pas un mythe : la difficulté de ne pas partager une langue (maternelle), des milieux sociaux et financiers différents, des cultures alimentaires diverses. Nous avions diverses façons de gérer les conflits, ou le genre.....

C'était un début difficile !

Mais n'est-ce pas exactement ce que nous voulions apprendre et partager ? Nous avons fait l'expérience d'une démonstration concrète de la façon dont nos différentes origines, l'histoire (coloniale) de nos pays et les énormes inégalités mondiales façonnent nos réalités et nos relations les uns avec les autres ! Et peut-être un aperçu de ce qu'il faut faire pour combler le décalage, pour trouver la guérison et la réconciliation…

Comment pouvez-vous nous soutenir ?

Après notre première rencontre en Allemagne en juillet, nous voulons nous retrouver au Sénégal en décembre pour continuer le voyage d'exploration - et créer un collage médiatique pour documenter et partager ce que nous avons appris et vécu !

Qu'est-ce que l'EYE ?

EYE (Ecovillage Youth Exchange) est un projet d'échange pour les jeunes adultes impliqués ou intéressés par les mouvements d'écovillages en Afrique et en Europe. Nous y explorons les étapes vers la guérison et la réconciliation entre et au sein des deux continents. Nous nous concentrons sur la capacitation des jeunes à travers le renforcement des compétences et l'échange de connaissances sur la vie écologique, l'éducation et le développement de projets, en travaillant vers un avenir régénératif et orienté vers la communauté.

L'EYE est également le premier projet de collaboration entre les réseaux mondiaux d'écovillages d'Afrique (GEN Africa) et d'Europe (GEN Europe).

Que s'est-il passé jusqu'ici ?

En juillet et août 2022, un groupe de 3 jeunes Sénégalais et 5 jeunes Allemands se sont rencontrés pendant 25 jours dans la communauté de Sonnenwald, dans le sud de l'Allemagne.

Nos premiers pas ont été d'apprendre à se connaître - Qui sommes-nous ? D'où venons-nous ? Quels sont nos rêves ? Comment développer ensemble un rythme quotidien qui respecte nos origines culturelles tout en nous permettant de cuisiner, manger, nettoyer, assembler, partager avec nos cœurs, rire, danser, jouer au football et discuter tous ensemble ?

Avec notre accompagnatrice de groupe, les membres de la communauté de Sonnenwald et de merveilleux formateurs qui ont fait le long chemin jusqu'à Sonnenwald, nous avons suivi un programme complet d'ateliers et tenté de tisser nos sujets ensemble dans une image complexe et diverse de nous-mêmes dans le monde : Des principes de la permaculture et de l'agriculture régénérative au travail pratique à la ferme de Sonnenwald (paillage des légumes et récolte des premières pommes de terre de la saison). De la Maison de la modernité (créditée à Vanessa Andreotti) et de la Fleur du pouvoir à la question de savoir : Quel est l'impact du colonialisme et du racisme sur nous aujourd'hui ? Dans nos vies quotidiennes, dans nos relations, et dans ce projet même ? Et comment la guérison peut-elle intervenir ? De l'écoute de l'Objectif de Développement Soutenable #11 et du mouvement global d'écovillage d'une perspective Sud-Nord à la discussion de ce que la "communauté" signifie pour nous avec les membres de la communauté de Sonnenwald. Du dragon dreaming (crédits à John Croft et Vivienne Elanta) à la planification de notre réunion au Sénégal.

Que se passera-t-il encore ?

En novembre/décembre 2022, nous nous retrouverons dans un écovillage au Sénégal (très probablement Bambay Serere) et poursuivrons notre voyage d'apprentissage et d'échange. Deux autres participants sénégalais nous y rejoindront. Cette fois-ci, nous voulons nous concentrer sur le (post)colonialisme, le racisme et les systèmes d'oppression qui nous affectent et affectent notre activisme jusqu'à aujourd'hui. Nous voulons explorer les approches de vie soutenable (construction naturelle, agriculture sèche, plantation d'arbres,...) qui sont mises en œuvre au Sénégal, et continuer notre échange sur la culture, la communauté, les traditions et le changement.

Le grand moment : nous voulons participer à la conférence GEN Africa en Gambie, et présenter de manière créative le projet EYE et nos apprentissages !

Tout au long de notre voyage, nous travaillons sur un projet visant à documenter et à diffuser nos apprentissages dans un collage médiatique de photos, de vidéos et de textes. Nous sommes impatients de le partager avec vous !

A quoi va servir votre argent ?

Avec 5€, vous pouvez couvrir un bloc de papier et de stylos pour que nous puissions matérialiser nos rêves et nos idées.

Avec 10€, nous pouvons payer une nuit à l'écovillage au Sénégal pour un participant.

50€ paient l'assurance maladie de voyage pour un participant.

100€ nous permettent de payer un traducteur wolof-français-anglais pour 2 jours (ce dont nous aurons besoin !).

250€ couvre la nourriture et les boissons pour un participant pendant notre visite au Sénégal.

500€ paye notre minivan pour voyager à travers le Sénégal et explorer les écovillages, les sites mémoriaux et visiter les maisons des autres.

900€ paient le billet d'avion (aller-retour Dakar - Munich) pour un participant.

Complétez le tout avec 41€ pour compenser les émissions de CO2 de notre voyage !

Toute somme excédentaire par rapport à notre budget sera versée à nos merveilleux formateurs, responsables de groupe et coordinateurs, qui ont fait beaucoup de travail gratuitement !

Comment le projet EYE a-t-il vu le jour ?

L'idée d'un échange d'écovillages pour les jeunes à travers les continents a été lancée par Philip et Sonja-Vera, deux fondateurs de communauté et membres du GEN du Kenya et de la Suisse. Ils ont planté leur graine dans le sol fertile d'un petit groupe d'initiateurs - Herman, Sonita et Julia. Avec un cercle de jusqu'à 20 personnes impliquées dans la GEN, la Next GEN et le mouvement de la permaculture, la vision du projet a été créée en 2019 - désormais fortement centrée sur les sujets centraux de la vie régénérative, de la justice raciale et sociale, et de la capacitation des jeunes. Il nous a fallu trois ans pour obtenir un financement de Teams up !, survivre aux restrictions de voyage de la pandémie de COVID et assembler une équipe de coordination dynamique... jusqu'à ce que EYE ait enfin lieu en 2022 !

Où voulons-nous aller ?

L'EYE veut se renouveler ! Dans les prochains cycles du projet d'échange, nous voulons impliquer des jeunes de plus de pays africains et européens et approfondir notre échange. Notre vision est de créer un réseau de jeunes bien informés et connectés qui introduisent la conversation sur les sujets de justice globale dans le mouvement des écovillages !
