AWL: Nicaragua Bridge & Water System

Aggies Without Limits is an NMSU student organization that focuses on building sustainable infrastructure for communities in need around the world. It gives students the opportunity to become global citizens and empowers them to make a difference. With the support of donors like you, we have successfully completed projects in Bolivia, Mexico, Guatemala, Nicaragua, and Puerto Rico. Our projects have included building water wells, potable-water systems, pedestrian bridges, community centers and schools. Besides designing and building these projects, our students develop skills in leadership, critical thinking, teamwork and most importantly, to respect and value diversity.

This summer we will be traveling to Nicaragua to service our previous pedestrian bridge projects (years ’11 and ’13), build a potable water distribution system, and restructure a school building. Over time the wood on these bridges has deteriorated due to the humid climate of Nicaragua. Our primary initiative is to replace the wood components with metal to create a durable, permanent solution. Additionally, we are planning to construct a hydraulic ram water pump to carry water uphill to approximately 22 homes.  The final phase of the project involves replacing the roof structure and improving the infrastructure of a local school to prevent flooding and increase safety for the student’s, so they can learn in a better environment. These projects will dramatically improve the lives of multiple communities by ensuring access to health care and basic necessities, potable drinking water, and a safe learning environment for the children.  Note:  all members attending this trip will be required to be Covid-19 vaccinated and safe Covid practices will be followed throughout the duration of the trip.

In order to complete this project, we will need to purchase supplies like cement, steel, cable, PVC, wood, and more.  A generous donor has already pledged to match donations up to $3,000!   Every donation will go directly toward building materials and travel expenses. We know that the real value of our organization lies in its ability to touch the lives of not only the communities we help, but also the lives of the many members and supporters of AWL. We are setting out on a huge mission, but we can't do it without you! Join us by making your donation today!
