Hello family and friends!
I am extremely excited to say that I have recently been accepted into a program to study and volunteer for 10 months in Sao Paulo, Brazil. I know this may come as a huge shock to some of you so let me explain a little more. I will still be continuing my college education online and im in no way dropping out of school. Volunteering in another country with less fortunate children has been one of my biggest dreams for as long as I can remember. Since beginning college, my urge to do this has just grown more and more and I have been looking for a way to do this for quite some time. I finally found the right program for me and after doing a lot of research and planning, I applied and have been accepted! I am so excited and grateful that I am so close to being able to participate in such an amazing opportunity! The program I will be going abroad with is through a company called The National Registration Center for Study Abroad (NRCSA). This is an acredited program that is going to make the process as safe as possible and ensure that I get the most out of this oportunity. Heres how the process works. I will be beginning my program on May 23, 2016 and will be returning around the beginning of March/ end of February 2017. For the first 13 weeks I am in Brazil I will be taking an intensive immersion method Portuguese course. This is the fastest and most effective way to learn the language. I will be spending 20 hours a week learning the language in a classroom setting, becoming familiar with the customs and norms of the culture, and interacting day to day in Brazil using a 100% Portuguese approach. This is the part of the program that costs money and I am fundraising for. Before I can go out into the community and volunteer, I have to be able to speak the language and be fully prepared to interact and abide by the cultural norms. These classes are roughly the same price as attending college in the United States and include outings, language instruction, dining experiences, and interaction opportunities. I researched various programs and after carefully reviewing them all, this program is the most reasonably priced and will benefit me the most. After the 13 weeks of classes is when I will begin my volunteer work. For those of you that may not know, in school, I am majoring in child and family development and plan on using my degree to be a childlife specialist. This means I will be working with children and families who are dealing with significant illnesses or trauma. As far as Brazil goes, the volunteer work that I have chosen to participate in will go directly to experience in this field. I will be working with an organization called Associacao Esporte Solidario. With this organization I will be contributing and working with the integral development of children and adolescents, providing assistance and health, and encouraging education. These children are all suffering from their surroundings and lack of resources. Some of them are ill, and others have been rescued from unbearable scenarios. Sao Paulo is the biggest city in all of North and South America and with that size comes overwhelmingly large numbers of people living in poverty and children and families going without basic necessities. I am determined to help in any way I can. In my eyes, if I better the life of one child and show them hope then this whole thing will have been worth it.
I am asking you, my family and friends, to help me make my dreams come true and help me to be able to take advantage of this amazing opportunity. I am currently working 2 jobs as a full time student and saving every penny I possibly can to pay for these classes and the expenses of this trip. But saving as much money as I need is very difficult on top of having to pay for rent, school, and everyday expenses. I have to pay for the program in full by April 30 and am reaching out asking for support. Literally everything helps and I am so appreciative of you all. While I am in Brazil I will be keeping a detailed blog of my experiences so that everyone can watch my journey as I experience it and see pictures and updates. I am so grateful for this opportunity and for the support i have already received and will continue to receive from everyone. Thank you guys, or as the Brazilians say, Obrigada!
