Aurora County made history in November 2025 as the FIRST county in South Dakota to officially proclaim October as First Responders Appreciation Month. Now we're launching South Dakota Safety Days (October 9th & 10th, 2026) to celebrate and support the brave first responders who protect our rural community every day.

On January 21st, 2026, Governor Larry Rhoden signed this proclamation - designating October 2026 as First Responders Appreciation Month for the entire State of South Dakota.

Why This Matters:

96% of South Dakota firefighters are volunteers - the highest rate in the nation

Rural first responders often lack funding for essential equipment and training

Aurora County's historic proclamation could inspire all 66 South Dakota counties to follow

South Dakota Safety Days brings together our community for safety demonstrations, educational programs, family activities, and fundraising to support our local fire departments, sheriff's office, and EMS services.
