OUR CHALLENGE:
First Responders, Veterans, and Service Members do IMPORTANT and IMPACTFUL work for our community that often comes at a personal cost to them. Many suffer from PTSD, and other traumas. If left untreated it can lead to a decreased quality of life at every level, including at risk of suicide. Suicide is the number one CAUSE of death among first responders, veterans, and other service members. The stigma around mental health and lack of AWARENESS creates challenges often misunderstood and overlooked, amplifying the disconnection and misunderstanding between our society and the community.
In Miami-Dade County, almost 30,000 animals (cats and dogs) arrive at an animal shelter annually. Some of them return to their owners, but many of them have been abandoned, abused or have been living on the streets for years. The difficult circumstances they come from often makes it harder for them to be adopted. However, these animals need a home, have a lot of LOVE to GIVE, have a purpose to serve and a connection to offer. With the proper training and support, they are capable of living to their full potential as loving and supportive companions.
THE SOLUTION:
Research proves animals can greatly contribute to the support and healing of individuals with PTSD. Our Legacy Project is raising funds, resources and community awareness in order to facilitate joyful and supportive partnerships between First Responders, Veterans and other Service Members in our community; and the animals they wish to bring into their lives. With your support, we can enhance the lives of those who contribute so much to our community and who have so much to give! This is our HEROE SIDE KICK legacy project!
