Athletes For Change

Bates Soccer Family,
After months of social unrest throughout the nation caused by the unjust deaths of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, followed most recently by the shooting of Jacob Blake, we are all left looking for ways we can bring the country together and support one another regardless of race, religion, and sexual orientation. As members of the NBA, WNBA, MLB, NHL, and MLS have shown, athletes have a unique voice and community that can be used to bring about swift and meaningful change.
Founded by abolitionists and as the first co-ed college in New England, Bates was built on ideals of freedom, equality, and diversity. We as representatives of that institution have the obligation to uphold and further those beliefs in any way that we can.
Accordingly, we are asking for contributions of any size to a fund that will be passed along to the Equal Justice Initiative (EJI). Beginning in 1989, EJI works to end mass incarceration and excessive punishment in the United States, while protecting human rights for the country's most at-risk populations. These are very complicated times, and donations are not the only path forward. Do what you can with what you have. Understand the history through books and film, contact your representatives, sign petitions, and start a conversation with your friends.
