January 2021: Athleague Community Centre Re-Development
Athleague is still reeling from the devastating floods of 2009. It led to the internal destruction of the heartbeat of our village – The Community Centre. Since it was first built in 1931, generations of families, people and friends have visited and used Athleague Community Centre.
Down through the years, thousands of young and old people - home and abroad – continue to have strong cultural memories and links to this building. Numerous sports presentations, drama nights, discos, bingo nights, art exhibitions, indoor sporting events, communion and Christmas parties have taken place here, both in times of celebration, as well as disappointment.
The last 12 months have been a very challenging time for everyone, some more than others. Nevertheless, the community has pulled together…yet again. In the Athleague style of pure grit, determination and optimism, the Community Centre Committee took on a hugely ambitious project to completely re-develop the entire building and to proceed on with the project no matter what obstales came their way, including a global pandemic. We remain determined and want to turn it into one of the most innovative social, recreational, community & business hubs in Rural Ireland! We realise that we all will need our Community Centre more than ever now.
This new upgrade will be of enormous benefit for our Community, as well as the surrounding areas that will benefit from its state of the art hub facilities. This will include a 220 square metre sports hall, function rooms, the Epi Centre hot desking/ business hub/ conference room, a training/ multipurpose area, canteen and accessible shower and toilet facilities.
The Total Project Cost (turnkey) is €402,650. Grant Aid towards the project from Roscommon LEADER Partnership, Roscommon County Council, Department of Rural & Community Development & SEAI together with local event fundraising/ donations (to October 2020) amounted to €301,212. Thus Athleague community had a shortfall of €101,438 at the end of 2020.
Fundraising Updates
Update: 06/01/2021
The Athleague Lockdown Lift Fundraiser in November and December 2020 raised a total of €8,208.00 from the 80 particiaplants that took part in the 6 week mind and body challenge. 20% of which (€1641.60 ) will be donated to the Mayo Roscommon Hospice. 80% of the funds raised (€6566.40) will be donated directly to the Community Centre Account.
Update 13/01/2021
The All Ireleand Football and Hurling Sqaures Fundraiser raised a profit of €5,300 which will be was donated directly to the Community Centre Account.
Update 14/01/2021
The shortfall is now €88,133.60
If we can raise the shortfall now, all future income from the centre will be re-invested towards Future Community Projects e.g. Income generated will be used as match funding for future grant applications being made by any of our Community Groups/ Sporting Organisations. The Covid 19 Pandemic may have delayed the project and hampered our fundraising ambitions. But we are determined that the future is bright for Athleague and that our Community Centre and its heartbeat will be back again very soon! The proposed project will be completed in April 2021.
Let's keep Athleague’s incredible community momentum going. Let’s do this together for the generation of today and leave a legacy for the next one!
Please donate what you can
If you wish to organise your own fundraiser for the Centre e.g Virtual Coffee Morning, Virtual Table Quiz or and any other suitable event, we can assist in its promotion on local social media pages. Any ideas will be gratefully supported. You may wish to organise a fundraiser where a donation is also made to a charity close to you or your own club/group. The more creative the idea the better and you will be supported!
