Help Tom Kraft Leave a Nursing Home
Donation protected
Hi, my name is Tom Kraft. I'm a 70 y/o disabled veteran who is a quadriplegic. I've been living in a nursing home for the past 4-1/2 years. I had sustained my original spinal cord injury in the Army where I was given a 10% disability rating. I functioned normally until I was 47 y/o. At that time I fell off a ladder and broke my neck and became totally and permanently disabled. However, thru the Grace of God, I had rehabbed to the point where I could walk with a cane and lead a fairly normal life. That all changed in Feb. of '20. I caught the flu twice followed by pneumonia all in about 5 weeks. It robbed me of most of my function and returned me to life in a wheelchair. I had pretty much resigned myself to living out my life here in this nursing home. However, recently, my sister Kate has offered to move down here and share an apartment with me. What a Godsend!
It would be a huge undertaking for her, a woman in her '60s. Putting everything in a U-Haul and towing her car from Buffalo, NY to Charlotte, NC. So, my son, Tyler, offered to fly up and make the trip with her. What a great son he is...always takes care of his Poppa! The problem, of course, is money. The cost of the U-Haul, gas/food on the trip, etc. We are both on Social Security. And with my being on Medicaid, the gov't takes all of my money. I thought my only option would be to get a couple credit cards and put all of the expenses of the move on cards. Unfortunately, we'd start our new lives in a lot of debt. That debt coupled with normal living expenses would make our lives pretty tenuous financially.
That's when I thought about reaching out to GoFundMe. I'm hoping and praying that y'all can find it in your hearts to spare us a few dollars to help this dream become our new reality. I hate to ask but it seems to be my best option at this time. Thanks for listening to my story.
Yours in Christ,
Tom Kraft`
