Assata’s House: Sanctuary for Healing and Liberation
Named for the meaning behind “Assata” — she who struggles — Assata’s House began as a vision rooted in healing, liberation, and the unwavering commitment to creating sanctuaries where Black women and girls can disarm their nervous systems, reclaim their bodies, and experience holistic care. This vision directly addresses the systemic violence, despair, and neglect disproportionately impacting Black communities—especially Black women and girls—who too often lack access to culturally competent wellness resources. Assata’s House fills this critical gap.
Our work honors a legacy of resistance to systemic injustice and models a transformative ecosystem of communal care, equity, and sustainability that reimagines how we nurture and empower one another.
The Journey of Assata’s House
The creation of Assata’s House has been a journey of deep intention and dedication. The project grew from Raylá White-Spraggins’ earlier work, particularly A Moment for Rest (March 2022), emphasizing the importance of rest and restoration during challenging times. Over time, Assata’s House has evolved into a comprehensive blueprint for community care, driven by a commitment to addressing urgent needs within our communities.
Weaving a tapestry of care to provide sanctuary for liberation, healing, and reimagining freedom
Assata’s House is an evolving liberatory ecosystem — rooted in collective practice, sanctuary, and care. Based in Philly, we are building a vibrant community of grounded, culturally-rooted co-creators who share our vision for healing, liberation, and holistic wellness.
Together, we are reshaping not just what care looks like but how it happens: through shared responsibility, clear roles, and mutual support. Moving beyond traditional program models, we create a living sanctuary that nurtures sustainable leadership and abundant care.
Our Core Pillars Guide Us
Healing through Hands and Land
- Our hands carry ancestral stories and healing arts. Through herbalism, touch therapies, and sacred earth connections, we nurture self-healing rooted in tradition and modern needs.
Reclaiming Land as Liberation
- Land is lifeline and legacy. We affirm Black women’s rights to land for survival and thriving, cultivating community gardens and sacred spaces as sources of nourishment and power.
Living the Indigenous Spirit
- Honoring Blackness as indigenous to the Americas, we integrate eco-spirituality, storytelling, and ceremony to root our liberation in ancestral and cosmic connection.
Expanding the Movement for Existence
- More than survival, we create systems of care, joy, and abundance where Black women reclaim time, health, and agency to build collective power.
Intergenerational Wisdom & Futurism
- Inspired by visionaries like Octavia Butler, we honor elders and ancestors while building toward a liberated future for generations to come.
