On January 3rd, 2026, I will run the Polar Night Half Marathon in Tromsø, Norway — a very special half marathon that takes place in the middle of the polar night, with extreme cold, snow, and darkness, illuminated only by the northern lights if luck is on our side. It will be a demanding athletic challenge, but I want it to have a much greater value than just the personal one.

I have decided to dedicate this race to a cause that deserves all our attention: Oncobierzo ( https://oncobierzo.org/ ) , an association that offers support and care to people with cancer and their families in the Bierzo region.

Their manifesto denounces the critical situation we have experienced: the lack of oncologists at the Hospital del Bierzo, delays in diagnoses and treatments, and the suffering this has caused patients and families. They call for dignified healthcare and demand real solutions so that healthcare in our region lives up to the dignity that the people of Bierzo deserve.

As someone from Bierzo, I also feel this challenge as a way to add my voice to theirs. In Bierzo, we have experienced firsthand what a lack of resources means: for months, our region had no oncologists at the hospital. Faced with this situation, Oncobierzo did not stand idly by: they organized historic demonstrations, such as the one in Ponferrada, my hometown, in June 2025, under the slogan “For me”, which brought together around 20,000 people demanding dignified oncology care and sufficient resources. They also took the protest to Valladolid, chartering buses to make the problem visible to the regional administration.

These actions proved that the people of Bierzo, united, are capable of raising their voices and demanding healthcare justice. And I want to do my part: I want this challenge in the Arctic Circle to also serve to raise funds so that Oncobierzo can continue growing and helping more people. In this way, every kilometer I run will be one more step toward a future with more resources, dignity, and support for those who need it.

El 3 de enero de 2026 correré la Polar Night Half Marathon en Tromsø, Noruega, una media maratón muy especial que transcurre en plena noche polar, con frío extremo, nieve y oscuridad, iluminada únicamente por la aurora boreal si la suerte acompaña. Será un reto deportivo exigente, pero quiero que tenga un valor mucho mayor que el personal.

He decidido dedicar esta carrera a una causa que merece toda nuestra atención: Oncobierzo ( https://oncobierzo.org/) , una asociación que ofrece apoyo y acompañamiento a personas con cáncer y a sus familias en la comarca del Bierzo.

Su manifiesto denuncia la situación crítica que hemos vivido: la falta de oncólogos en el Hospital del Bierzo, los retrasos en diagnósticos y tratamientos y el sufrimiento que esto ha provocado en pacientes y familias. Reclaman una atención sanitaria digna y exigen soluciones reales para que la sanidad en nuestra comarca esté a la altura de la dignidad que merecemos los bercianos.

Como berciano, siento este reto también como una forma de sumar mi voz a la suya. En el Bierzo hemos vivido de cerca lo que significa la falta de recursos: durante meses, nuestra comarca estuvo sin oncólogos en el hospital. Ante esta situación, Oncobierzo no se quedó de brazos cruzados: organizó movilizaciones históricas, como la manifestación en Ponferrada, mi ciudad, en junio de 2025, bajo el lema “Por mí”, que reunió a unas 20.000 personas reclamando atención oncológica digna y recursos suficientes. También llevaron la protesta a Valladolid, fletando autobuses para visibilizar el problema ante la administración autonómica.

Estas acciones demostraron que la sociedad berciana, unida, es capaz de alzar la voz y exigir justicia sanitaria. Y yo quiero poner mi granito de arena: que este desafío en el Círculo Polar Ártico sirva también para recaudar fondos que permitan a Oncobierzo seguir creciendo y ayudando a más personas. Así, cada kilómetro que corra será un paso más hacia un futuro con más recursos, dignidad y apoyo para quienes lo necesitan.
