Dear Friends,

My name is Gill Eatherley, artist and art educator based in France but working since 2005 with the children in the Lacandon Maya Community of Naha in Chiapas, Mexico.

I am hoping you will support the two exhibitions that will take place this year 2025 in Naha and in San Cristóbal de las Casas. For the last 20 years I have been collecting the artworks made in workshops I have held in Naha – ‘Así es Naha’ is the name of this collection which has been shown in Mexico and Europe. It includes cloth painted frescoes, drawings, films, photos, artifacts and books.

For the first exhibition I have decided to take the whole collection down to the forest in Naha – it will be the first time ever that the artists will see their work since I began going to Naha. At the same time I will take materials to hold a workshop for children and adults, hoping to bring some new work up to San Cristóbal for the second exhibition.

I have been asked by Raúl Durón, the director of the Centro Cultural de los Altos, the magnificent 17th century ex convento de Santo Domingo de Guzmán to curate ‘Así es Naha’ in his museum. It will be the first really comprehensive showing of this historic collection covering cultural and social changes which have evolved since I began in Naha. Also I will have workshops in the beautiful museum cloisters for market and street children of San Cristóbal.

These two exhibitions will be dedicated to Doña Betty who left us in January this year and was a dear special friend to all the Lacandon people and the Association Na Bolom in San Cristóbal.

For all of this to happen we need financial help, however small, from as many of you generous people as possible. For the first event, funding is needed to transport the collection down to Naha, the installation, workshop materials, assistance and accommodation for three weeks.

For the second event, we need help with the installation in the Museum and workshop materials, and accommodation for me in San Cristóbal for three weeks.

I estimate a total of 2990 € should cover the expenses. (This does not include any of my own time , major traveling costs, reprinting of the book ‘Historia del Maiz’ and postcards )

The film you see here was entirely organized by the children with an external cameraman.

Mi nombre es Gill Eatherley, artista y educadora de arte radicada en Francia pero trabajando desde 2005 con los niños de la Comunidad Maya Lacandona de Naha en Chiapas, México.

Espero que apoyen las dos exposiciones que tendrán lugar este año 2025 en Naha y en San Cristóbal de las Casas. Durante los últimos 20 años he estado recopilando las obras de arte realizadas en los talleres que he impartido en Naha - 'Así es Naha' es el nombre de esta colección que ha sido expuesta en México y Europa. Para que todo esto se lleve a cabo necesitamos la ayuda económica, por pequeña que sea, del mayor número posible de ustedes, personas generosas. Para el primer evento, se necesita financiación para el transporte de la colección hasta Naha, la instalación, los materiales del taller, la asistencia y el alojamiento durante tres semanas.

Para el segundo evento, necesitamos ayuda para la instalación en el Museo y los materiales del taller, y alojamiento para mí en San Cristóbal durante tres semanas.
